Uber for Business helps corporate users report on sustainability

Our changing climate has put sustainability top of mind for companies, especially businesses that have set ambitious climate goals and want to better understand their carbon footprint. 

To help, Uber for Business is launching sustainability insights in our dashboard, giving companies the ability to track carbon emissions data, view and report on how frequently employees use low-emission trips, and act on their ground transportation carbon emissions. Organizations can access metrics such as total carbon emissions and the percentage of corporate travel trips taken on eco-friendly alternatives, including Uber Green, Uber Comfort Electric, and Uber Planet, where available.

Globally, more than 1,700 organizations have already submitted concrete plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). A recent report published by the Global Business Travel Association found such measures are of growing importance for businesses. More than 80% of travel managers say sustainability is at least “somewhat important” in the design of their company’s travel program, with 50% saying it is “very or extremely important.” 

While sustainable transportation alternatives, like Uber Green, are becoming more popular among Uber for Business clients, carbon emissions tracking has also emerged as a top requested capability. 

Now with sustainability insights, Uber for Business clients have more knowledge about their company’s sustainability progress when it comes to corporate travel with Uber. These insights help businesses understand their corporate travel carbon footprint and equip them with information to reduce it. 

Transparency and reporting drive progress

Corporate users will now have access to the following metrics, which are displayed transparently on the Uber for Business admin dashboard: 

  • Total low-emission trips: Provides visibility into the total number of trips taken using Uber Green, Uber Comfort Electric, and Uber Planet (available in Latin America). This allows Uber for Business customers to understand how often employees are opting for a green ride. 
  • Low-emission trip percentage: Displays the proportion of low-emission trips to total trips taken by the customer. This shows the bigger picture, allowing companies to quickly gauge how many trips align with their climate commitments. 
  • Total emissions (kgCO2): Monitors the total number of carbon emissions emitted by a company across all rides used in a given time frame with Uber.
  • Average gCO2 emissions per mile: Allows companies to analyze carbon emission performance based on distance traveled. Calculated by total emissions divided by total distance in a given time, expressed as gCO2 per mile. 
  • Graph of total emissions by average gCO2 per mile: Lets companies visually observe carbon emissions over time to evaluate how they’re progressing toward their near- and long-term targets. 

These insights provide companies with a consistent measurement of carbon emissions from ground transport and can be included in annual environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reports, as well as other reporting materials stating corporate sustainability intentions and progress on achieving net-zero goals. 

Pilot users are seeing promising results

In the past few months, a select group of businesses across a range of sectors have piloted the new sustainability insights. These companies have begun to make sustainability insights a part of their corporate travel programs, ESG reporting, and overall corporate social responsibility initiatives. 

Software leader Salesforce, a pilot customer, has leveraged sustainability insights to gain greater visibility into the impact of their business travel program.
