Our mission is to connect everyone to safe, reliable rides that arrive within minutes at the tap of a button. We know that riders and drivers with accessibility needs face a variety of problems accessing on-demand transportation in Toronto. That’s why we’re dedicated to increasing the mobility, efficiency, and freedom of all riders and driver-partners across the platform.
While there’s more that can be done to help everyone move around our city, Uber is proud to be a part of the solution. Here are the options currently available to riders and driver-partners with accessibility needs:
uberWAV: WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILE VEHICLES
uberWAV, formerly known as uberACCESS, connects riders in wheelchairs with licensed WAV Taxi or Accessible Dignity Transportation drivers whose vehicles are equipped with ramps or lifts. To request uberWAV in Toronto, select uberWAV in the slider, set your location, and request to be connected with a ride.
uberASSIST: DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE FOR THOSE WHO COULD USE AN EXTRA HAND
uberASSIST is an option designed for riders who may have a disability, older adults, and those who may just feel more comfortable with an extra hand when getting from place to place. Drivers will provide door-to-door service, helping riders to enter and exit the vehicle. uberASSIST will also be priced the same as uberX.
FEATURES FOR THE BLIND AND VISION-IMPAIRED COMMUNITY
With VoiceOver for iOS and wireless braille display compatibility, the Uber app provides a safe and reliable transportation option for the blind and visually-impaired community. Read more about our commitment to the blind and vision-impaired community here.
FEATURES FOR THE DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING COMMUNITY
We’ve designed innovative in-app features to further economic opportunity for our deaf and hard-of-hearing driver-partners. Visible and vibrating alerts aid deaf and hard-of-hearing driver-partners as they connect with riders. In-app features, such as the ability to enter a destination, ensure effective communication from the rider to the driver-partner. You can read more about the app features here.
OUR ACCESSIBILITY CURRICULUM AND POLICY
We take compliance with local accessibility laws very seriously. Driver-partners receive an accessibility compliance notification and video on accommodating riders with disabilities. Our code of conduct details Uber’s policy on accommodating people with disabilities and specifically prohibits any type of discrimination in serving riders with disabilities.
We are working closely with accessibility community leaders across Canada to improve access to safe, reliable, and on-demand rides for everyone. If you have any feedback on how we can improve options for people with accessibility needs, please connect with us.
