We’re excited to now offer people in Northern Tasmania a safe and affordable way to get around with the launch of the Uber app.

From 12pm today, locals and visitors to Launceston, Devonport and Burnie will be able to request a safe and convenient ride at the touch of a button on their smartphone.

Via the Uber app, they’ll be linked to around 40 local driver-partners who have already had their vehicles inspected by a Government-accredited provider, and hold an Ancillary Certificate issued by the Department of State Growth.

Driving transport choice in Tasmanians

We’re pleased that more than 3.8 million Aussies already use ridesharing regularly to get around. We are excited we can now offer that same choice to more Tasmanian riders as well.

Tens of thousands of people from more than 70 countries have used the Uber app in Hobart in recent months.

While Northern Tasmania is a great place to live, it isn’t always easy to get around without driving. Our launch is set to take pressure off local public transport and give residents an affordable alternative to get from A to B.

It will mean more transport options on weekends and during major events, when it’s historically been hardest to get a safe and affordable ride home after a few drinks.

This is particularly important as we try to encourage locals to ‘ditch the keys’ when enjoying a big day or night out, to make our roads safer.

A new way to make money for locals

Uber wouldn’t be Uber without our driver-partners, so today’s launch is also a win for those keen to make extra money on their own schedule.

With Uber, drivers have complete flexibility to drive as and when it suits them – and we know that one-third (33%) of Tasmanian partners choose to drive for less than 10 hours a week.

We expect the opportunity to earn extra money driving a few hours during busy times of the day and year will appeal to many in Launceston, Devonport and Burnie.

If you or a friend is interested in a flexible way to earn money, you can register your interest here.

Celebrating cities is what we do best, by helping people get around them at the touch of a button.

We’re offering $20 off the first ride to new riders who sign up to Uber with the code TASSIE (new users only, not valid on Uber Eats. Valid in Tasmania and expires 31/08/2018).
