At 6am this morning JUMP electric bikes finally became visible inside the Uber app in Melbourne.

After years of planning, welcoming JUMP to Australian shores feels satisfying but I’m under no illusion that there is more hard work, more rubber to meet the road and more fine-tuning before we can truly celebrate success here in Victoria and indeed across the country.

Having seen the enormous impact JUMP has already unlocked in 30 other world class cities around the world I am genuinely energised by the possibilities this convenient mode of transit will bring to Australians – starting with Melburnians.

There’s a reason ‘it’s just like riding a bike’ is a well worn saying. For me it’s because that magical moment of finally discovering the freedom of mastering a bike for the first time is timelessly joyous. I’m confident that Victorians will rekindle those same feelings when they discover the magic of JUMP’s pedal assist to catapult them up hills or help them make their morning commute faster and more enjoyable, all without breaking a sweat.

Moments like this are a chance to acknowledge forward thinking councillors, mayors and parliamentarians who have embraced a solution that they can see can brings added convenience and alongside it improved streetscapes for visitors and locals alike. Port Phllip, Yarra and Melbourne City have embraced JUMP and share our enthusiasm for this trial.

JUMP e-bikes are unlike any other solution previously trialled in Australia. The result of a decade of product development has yielded a sturdier, more reliable and ultimately more enjoyable riding experience than ever before and Australian’s ultimately welcome technology and hardware that makes their lives easier.

We’re committed to being a reliable partner for the cities where we are available and want to promote safe riding behaviour so helmets will be provided alongside JUMP’s distinctive red electric bikes and users will get in-app instructions about how to safely use and park the e-bikes. The e-bikes also have built in cable locks which mean they can be safely secured to bike infrastructure.

It’s simple to book a JUMP in Melbourne using the Uber app:

  • Tap the mode switch on the home screen to switch the app view to bikes
  • You’ll see the available JUMP bikes around you; reserve  through the app or scan the QR code on the handlebars or near the lock to unlock.
  • Once the e-bike unlocks remove the lock from the rear wheel to start and off you go.
  • Once you’re finished riding, end your trip by locking the bike using the cable lock in the e-bike zone shown on the app’s map.
  • Loop the helmet to the cable lock before locking up so it’s ready for the next ride.

I look forward to seeing you on the road soon!
