Hole in Uber One: Hollywood icon Chris McDonald celebrates McDonald’s joining Uber One
Written byTo celebrate McDonald’s Australia being back on Uber’s membership program Uber One, the two brands have enlisted Hollywood actor and golfing purist, Chris McDonald as the chiding face of their new campaign.
In the launch spot McDonald, famous for playing fiercely opinionated characters, takes a full-swing at open-invite club memberships to highlight what an outrage it is that simply anyone can get exclusive deals* and good value using Uber One to order from Macca’s.
The film opens with McDonald striding onto the first tee of an elite golf course, his caddy trailing behind as he clumsily balances a golf bag and Uber Eats bag. Despite being in his element, he looks displeased.
McDonald reveals his agent set him up with an Uber One job that was meant to be about exclusive deals. But it turns out anyone can join. He commands his phone from his caddy, and without breaking stride, fires his agent on the spot before teeing up his golf ball.
He muses: “Uber One’s not exclusive. Anyone with a pulse and a smartphone can join. It’s one big pool of mediocrity… and discounts.”
McDonald scans over his shoulder and shudders at the pedigree of golfers waiting behind him, who are certainly not country club material. Without missing a beat, he whacks his drive beautifully and we watch the golf ball fly straight and long against the greenery.
The antagonist takes the wheel of his golf cart and begrudgingly commits to finishing his job, the ad for Uber One. As he begins filming, social golfers at the edge of the green pipe up to correct McDonald’s script lines: “We call it Macca’s here, mate!”
Exasperated, McDonald begins to lose his cool when a delivery person whizzes on the green to deliver a Macca’s order to the boisterous, cheering golfers. He crumples one of the Uber Eats bags with his club in rage, before storming off in his golf cart.
“Off-screen, I’m an avid golfer and teeing up this campaign in Australia is a hole-in-one for me. I wholeheartedly agree that anyone should be able to join the Uber One club for great McDonald’s deals. And hey, I’d never miss an opportunity to let loose on the green. We had a ball – it’s my first time down under and I’m happy to say, I know what ‘Macca’s’ means now.”
General Manager, Uber Eats ANZ Ed Kitchen had a different take, ”Unlike the star of this campaign I’ve never been a fan of the stuffy elitism of most memberships. Uber One has always been focused on providing incredible savings and access to awesome benefits for our members – having Macca’s on Uber One gives our membership offering the gold jacket status once more.”
Senior Marketing Director for McDonald’s Australia Mary Vrančić said, “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Uber One to give Aussies more of the great value they know and love to their doorstep, and what better way to showcase it than with a show-stopping campaign like this.”
To celebrate the new campaign there will be nine golden deals on Uber One, with a free menu item available on Macca’s orders over $25 on Uber Eats, including –
Wednesday 7 May – 10-piece Chicken McNuggets
Thursday 8 May – Big Mac
Friday 9 May – McChicken
