We’re excited to now offer people in Darwin a safe and affordable way to get around with the launch of the Uber app.

From 3pm today, locals and visitors to Darwin will be able to request a ride at the touch of a button on their smartphone.

Via the Uber app, they’ll be linked to local driver-partners who are 100% compliant with Northern Territory regulations for ridesharing.

In the last year, we have seen the Uber app opened over 90,000 times by Darwin locals and visitors looking for a ride, so we are pleased to be able to respond to that demand now. We hope Uber will be embraced by locals and help complement existing tourism operations, making trips to the NT even more enjoyable for visitors.

More choice for Darwin locals

While we all know Darwin is a great place to live, it isn’t always easy to get around without driving. We hope the launch of Uber will complement existing public transport options in Darwin, with an affordable way to get from A to B.

It will also mean more transport options on weekends and during major events, and enable locals to get home safely at the end of the night, making the roads safer for everyone.

Safety is built into every Uber trip — drivers are accredited and pass background checks before using the platform, each trip is GPS tracked, riders can share their trip status with friends and family for peace of mind, and our ratings system helps support a positive experience for all.

A new way to make money for locals

Today’s launch is also a win for those keen to make extra money on their own schedule.

With Uber, driver-partners have complete flexibility to drive as and when it suits them — and we see driver-partners fit Uber around their studies, other work and family responsibilities.

We anticipate the opportunity to earn some extra money driving, especially around busy weekends and events, will appeal to those living in Darwin.
