Tragically, nearly 3,500 people are killed on the world’s roads each day. Left unchecked, road crashes will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 – surpassing heart disease and HIV/AIDS.  This global epidemic demands our attention.

During this year’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Uber is reminding rider and drivers to always buckle up. Reducing road fatalities and serious injuries requires action. This simple but important step can save your life.

Buckling up

In 1970, Victoria became the first jurisdiction in the world to mandate all passengers had to wear seat belts in motor vehicles. All other states and territories followed suit by 1973. Despite this, it’s estimated that around 3-4 percent of Australians still don’t wear seat belts.

The World Health Organisation says buckling up reduces the risk death by about 50 percent. Imagine the impact we could have if we all changed our habits and remembered to buckle up each and every time.

If the goal is to get to zero road deaths and severe injuries, we all have a role to play. Whenever you get into a car, remember to buckle up. Here are some additional tips to help you stay safe while riding with Uber.
