Over 70% of Montrealers support Regulations for Ridesharing

This week, we launched an awareness campaign so Montrealers could share their support for Uber with their elected representatives. We also worked with Leger to conduct a public opinion poll. The results are clear: Montreal supports ridesharing and new regulations for the sharing economy. Here are some of the key findings:

Key Highlights:

• Almost everybody living in Montreal has heard of Uber (85%) and three-quarters of Montrealers (75%) have a positive opinion of the new sharing economy services, such as Uber.
• Three-quarters of Montrealers agree that both levels of government – provincial (74%) and municipal (73%) – should develop new regulations or laws that would accommodate new sharing economies, such as uberX.
• In fact, two-thirds of Montrealers (68%) don’t support the city towing or impounding the cars of uberX drivers. Only 19% support the actions of the city in this respect.
• Only a quarter of Montrealers (28%) support Poëti’s views that uberX should be illegal. Half of Montrealers (53%) don’t think it should be illegal.

In order to meet the research objectives, a Web survey was conducted by Leger from August 7 to August 9, 2015 among a representative sample of 501 English or French-speaking adults living in Montreal.
Using data from Statistics Canada, results were weighted according to age, gender, mother tongue and education in order to ensure a representative sample of the entire population under review.
For the purpose of comparison, a probabilistic sample of 501 respondents would yield a margin of error of ± 4.90%, 19 times out of 20.
