As we reimagine the way the world moves and emerge from two years unlike any before, we often receive the question: what does life at Uber Japan look like today? What makes working at Uber Japan different? And what do we value most about working at Uber? We spoke to team members across our Japan team to find out #WhyWeUber
What surprised you when you first joined Uber?
“I was surprised how international and diverse our teams in Japan are. I would guess around a third of our employees are not originally from here and I like that I can use a mix of English and Japanese in my day to day work. It’s energizing to work in such environment and I appreciate Uber welcoming my background,” Moa Okamoto, Chief of Staff.
What’s your favorite Uber benefit?
“Uber Credits! I am really spoiled with regular food deliveries, groceries and free rides,” Jashil Kim, Operations.
What do you like about the work you do?
“I like that I work for a company whose product is recognized and used by so many people. One of my proudest achievements since joining was helping to launch our “tonight i’ll be eating” campaign. Even my friends who don’t know that I work at Uber recognize that campaign,” Yuki Nabeta, Marketing.
What’s your favorite office amenity?
“Definitely the free food and snacks! I’ll usually grab a smoothie in the morning from the kitchen with some avocado toast and then come back at lunch for the buffet. I like that the menu changes daily. My favorites so far have been the tacos as well as the curry and naan,” Chris Battin, Talent Acquisition.
How would you describe your work-life balance?
“I like that Uber offers me the flexibility to set my own schedule. These days I spend about half my time working from home and half my time at the office, but it depends on the week. Uber also allows for one month of remote work, so this year I plan to go back to the USA for three weeks and work from my parents house,” Yuji Inaba, People & Places
What’s been one of your best experiences working at Uber?
“One of my best memories at Uber has got to be Uberversity in Singapore 2019. The opportunity to fly overseas and meet all of my international colleges, learn about our business, and experience the culture was an amazing experience I will never forget,” Yuka Nagamine, Sales.
What Uber value resonates the most with you?
“I really love all eight of our cultural values, but if I had to choose my favorite it would be Build With Heart. We try to solve a lot of complex problems here at Uber and we do it for the greater good and because we want to make earners, consumers, and merchants happy,” Shin Nakagawa, Leadership.
