In June 2024, Uber reached an agreement with Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell that gives drivers access to new protections and benefits. Under the agreement, for Rides trips that begin in Massachusetts, you are guaranteed minimum earnings of $32.50 per hour during active time. Read on to learn more about how active time is defined and how to calculate your active time in Massachusetts:
Active Time
- Active time is the time from when you accept a trip request until you drop off a rider at their destination.
- Your active time will only be calculated on Rides trips that begin in Massachusetts.
- Delivery trips, or any Rides trips that begin outside Massachusetts, do not contribute to your active time. Any active time on overlapping trips (i.e shared Rides) will count only once.
- Under Uber’s agreement with the Attorney General, only certain time during canceled trips qualifies as active time.
- The time you spend driving before a rider cancels does count toward your active time; the time you spend driving after you have been notified of a rider cancellation does not.
- The time you spend driving on a trip where you cancel before dropping off your passenger does not count toward your active time.
Calculating your Active Time
To calculate your active time in Massachusetts, Uber provides timestamps on your trip receipts. You can see these receipts by visiting drivers.uber.com, going to the “Activity” tab and clicking on an individual trip. These timestamps are only available at drivers.uber.com.
On Rides trips in Massachusetts, Uber will provide you with three timestamps:
- Accept Trip Timestamp: Records when you accept a trip request and are en route to a rider’s pickup location
- Begin Trip Timestamp: Records when you pick up the rider begin a trip *
- End Trip Timestamp: Records when you drop off the rider and end the trip **
* Select trips may not have begin trip timestamps
**Select trips may have end timestamps without passenger activity
Active time on a traditional Rides trip is calculated by measuring the time between Accept Trip Timestamp and End Trip Timestamp.
As mentioned above, active time from overlapping trips only counts once, so if you’re on a trip and accept a new request, the overlapping time from Trip 1 and Trip 2 are deduplicated.
You can calculate your active time by measuring the time between your Accept Trip Timestamp and End Trip Timestamp and deduplicating any time that overlaps with another trip.
See below for sample trip scenarios to learn how to calculate your active time.
Sample Calculation
Scenario 1: UberX Trip in Boston, Massachusetts
- Accept Trip Timestamp: 8:00 am
- Begin Trip Timestamp: 8:05 am
- End Trip Timestamp: 8:30 am
On this trip, the driver accepted the trip at 8:00 am and completed the dropoff at 8:30 am. The driver has 30 minutes of active time from this trip.
Scenario 2: UberX Trip with Forward Dispatch UberXL Trip in Worcester, Massachusetts
UberX trip:
- Accept Trip Timestamp: 8:00 am
- Begin Trip Timestamp: 8:05 am
- End Trip Timestamp: 8:30 am

- Begin Trip Timestamp: 8:35 am
- End Trip Timestamp: 8:45 am
On these overlapping trips, the driver accepted their first trip at 8 am and completed their last dropoff at 8:45 am. The driver has 45 minutes of active time from these overlapping trips.
Scenario 3: UberX Share Trip with overlapping UberX Share Trip in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
UberX Share trip 1:
