Juan Pablo Menichetti has been a software engineer for more than 20 years and spent the last decade as an engineering manager. He’s not just passionate about tech and software development; he’s also a big hiker, gamer, and plastic model builder (particularly, Star Wars ships!). Curious about why he decided to join Uber and what keeps him motivated? Read on.
🚗 Juan Pablo joined Uber in 2023 as an Engineering Manager in the Groceries and Retail vertical supporting Delivery.
“I currently manage a team of 15 engineers, and we are responsible for creating the best experience possible for shoppers during onboarding, checkout, and payment processes. We strive to ensure that all orders placed are fulfilled as reliably as possible, that customers are accurately charged, and that merchants get paid accurately and on time.”
🚀 Being part of a once-in-a-generation company where his daily work directly positively impacts the lives of millions of people motivates him. He stays at Uber because he learns something new every day.
“Uber’s a company that has a real impact on the real world for real people. The company is pushing the boundaries of our global understanding of mobility and grocery/retail shopping every month. We get to provide people with new ways to earn money with a new level of flexibility and simplify the lives of consumers who need to get their everyday groceries. This is quite a complex endeavor, so the technical challenges we face are unique, exciting, and require excellence on every level.”
📈 Juan Pablo’s team works on several integrations with merchants that simplify the payment process and the subsequent reimbursement process.
“Those integrations also allow Uber to get much more accurate data about totals, taxes, and even item details without depending on a physical receipt. It’s a dynamic space and requires constant effort from engineering to detect these cases, separate them from valid scenarios, and strengthen our platforms weekly.”
🌎Now’s a great time to join the team because you get to build locally but ship globally.
“Uber has a strong presence in Chile. We are working to create a single identity, culture, and team with technical expertise. We have an exciting balance between local and global experiences, in other words having local teammates but being fully integrated with Uber’s global organizations.”
🏠 🏢 Juan Pablo works hybrid, which means half his time is spent in the office and half working from home. Office time is great for collaboration, and the snacks don’t hurt either.
“Our hybrid work philosophy balances the flexibility of working at home with the benefits of also sharing a physical space with your teammates. Hiring locally allows us to have in-person 1:1s, design discussions, and team-building activities. Coming to our office is also a great opportunity to create links with other teams in the LATAM tech hub. Quite important too, the coffee and snacks are amazing 🙂.”
🛠Uber’s a very unique opportunity for engineers in LATAM, and Juan Pablo believes Uber has shown that the region is ready to contribute to big tech.
“If you see an open position, go get it. The interview process here at Uber is very supportive and provides candidates with the time and tools to be prepared for their process. My main advice would be to be confident in your previous achievements and come prepared with examples that help reflect your skills. Technical knowledge is also important, but make sure you demonstrate it along with examples of collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking.”
