Autonomous vehicles are coming to more cities

AVs (autonomous vehicles) are gradually becoming available on the Uber app in select cities, including Dallas. This is a part of our mission to create a hybrid marketplace where AVs and drivers serve our customers in their own unique way.

What’s happening?

We’re beginning to introduce autonomous vehicles in select cities. Every rollout is closely monitored, and availability may vary based on geography and time of day. The places and times of operation are expected to evolve over time.

Drivers remain at the heart of our platform. You’ll continue to have ways to earn across rides, deliveries, and more, and we’ll keep those opportunities growing as the availability of AVs expands.

Where is this happening?

Right now, Uber and our partners offer autonomous vehicles only in sections of certain US cities, representing a small part of our network. Cities include Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, and Phoenix.

How it works?

Riders who request an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric in cities with AVs may get matched with an AV if available, and they can choose to accept the ride. They can also customize their Uber app settings to boost their chances of matching with an autonomous vehicle.

When AVs first come to your city, some rides may have a specialist in the driver’s seat from our autonomous partners to monitor the vehicle and take over driving if needed to help ensure a smooth and safe experience.

What this means for you

AVs are designed to complement, not replace, drivers.

Here’s what you should know:

  • We expect minimal driver impact
  • AVs are limited by geography within a city and operate during specific times of day
  • AVs will help meet rider demand during busy times, or in areas with fewer available drivers
  • As the platform grows, more rider engagement means more opportunities for drivers

AVs are simply another way to help meet demand, so more riders can move and drivers can maximize their earnings.

Uber’s commitment

We’re committed to building a hybrid marketplace where AVs and drivers serve our customers in their own unique way. Autonomous vehicles are not a replacement; they’re part of a long-term approach to growth that keeps people at the center of everything we do.

Looking ahead

As AVs expand to more cities, we’ll keep you updated first.

Your experience, feedback, and partnership guide how we move forward.
