Since we launched UberMILITARY in September 2014, we have seen thousands of members of the military community take advantage of the entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the Uber platform. Today, UberMILITARY partners are earning more than $1 million each week and have taken home over $35 million since the start of the program. While all UberMILITARY partner drivers have served, not all have done so in uniform. Many are military spouses who have discovered the flexible nature of operating on the Uber platform.
The typical military family relocates an average of 8 times over a 20-year career
In honor of National Military Appreciation Month, we are proud to announce a new campaign within our UberMILITARY initiative — the UberMILITARY Families Coalition — that will focus specifically on helping military families take advantage of the flexible earning power of the Uber platform. Member organizations include American Military Partner Association, Blue Star Families, Hiring Our Heroes and National Military Family Association.
“Military spouses face significant challenges with employment due to their service members’ frequent moves, and the UberMILITARY program is a unique and innovative way to help address these challenges. AMPA is proud to partner with Uber for this program, helping make a difference in the lives of our modern military families who sacrifice so much for our nation.”
Ashley Broadway-Mack, President, American Military Partner Association
“Our annual survey notes that finding a flexible and portable career is one of the greatest challenges to military spouse employment. With 58% of spouses looking for opportunities outside the home, Blue Star Families is always looking for innovative partners to support military family members. UberMILITARY Families uniquely addresses this employment hurdle and helps fill the gap for jobs that can easily transfer from station to station.”
Noeleen Tillman, Executive Director, Blue Star Families
“Uber’s commitment to bring on 50,000 veterans and military spouses sent a powerful message to American business about the value of veterans and military spouses in the workforce, but it also signaled Uber’s long-term commitment to these men and women. Deepening the focus on military spouse candidates is a natural and great next step for the campaign.”
Eric Eversole, Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and President of Hiring Our Heroes
“Military families are the backbone of our country, and spouses often put their own careers on hold to support their service member. UberMILITARY gives spouses the opportunity to make their own schedule, using their own vehicle, to make some extra cash for their family. NMFA is proud to work with Uber and their UberMILITARY program to offer spouses a new opportunity to support their families financially.”
Joyce Raezer, Executive Director, National Military Family Association
Some of the ways we’re working together with our partners in the UberMILITARY Families Coalition include:
- Hosting knowledge sharing sessions with some of Uber’s top in-house marketing, communications, analytics and engineering professionals.
- Providing rides for military spouses and families to partner career fairs and other events, such as National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple camps, Blue Star Families’ Uber-sponsored Networks Live! events in Virginia and Washington, and the American Military Partner Association’s 2nd Annual Gala.
- Establishing strategic alliances between our partners’ local chapters and our 45+ UberMILITARY leads across the country.
- Collaborating to identify creative new ways to advance the broader missions of our partner organizations to support and advocate for military families.
Introducing UberMILITARY Director Todd Bowers
Uber is also proud to introduce our new UberMILITARY Director, Todd Bowers. Todd joins us from JP Morgan Chase where he worked in the Office of Global Philanthropy. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Executive Director for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. He served 12 years in the United State Marine Corps Reserve reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 2011. Todd will work closely with our UberMILITARY Advisory Board and focus on developing and strengthening our engagements with new and existing stakeholders within the military community.
