Since the idea of Uber was born, we’ve been on a journey of learning and growth, continually striving to be better — better partners to drivers and couriers, better residents of Europe, and better citizens of our planet. Some of our best efforts still go unnoticed, which - sometimes - fuels misunderstandings around Uber’s mission. It’s our duty - and the right time - to explain all of the things that we do do. And in this way, reaffirm our unwavering commitment to people, businesses and local communities we serve.
Uber is bad for the economy
In 2022, Uber helped drivers, couriers, and restaurants in Europe earn €14 billion—money that goes back into local communities. By creating opportunities to earn, Uber plays an important and positive role in the daily life of many people in Europe. For them, Uber is more than just an app.
Uber hurts local businesses
Uber Eats delivers or facilitates the delivery of over 30 million orders for local restaurants in Europe each month. That's more than 400 million orders per year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Uber Eats helped thousands of restaurants and other businesse adapt. Delivery has since become indispensable for many restaurant owners and for all those who use Uber Eats.
Uber harms the taxi industry
Over 10% of trips in Europe are made by taxi, providing extra earnings to 77,000 taxi drivers in more than 100 cities. Thanks to Uber, thousands of drivers can find rides more easily, converting previous idle waiting times into profitable hours. Many people across Europe have more choice and can more easily access rides on the Uber app.
Uber does not work with unions
Uber works with unions in many European countries (including Belgium, France and the UK) providing 200,000+ drivers and couriers guaranteed representation and social protections. Representation gives drivers a voice and a seat at the table, which, fundamentally, helps Uber be a better business. We are ready, willing, and able to work together with unions in every country to guarantee the benefits and protections that drivers and couriers deserve — while maintaining the independence they want.
Uber pollutes cities
We believe that bold measures are needed to combat the climate crisis. Uber has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2030 in line with the European Green Deal’s ambitions, and we have already helped more than 18,000 European drivers go electric. We're committed to partnering with public authorities, civil society, and other stakeholders to achieve economy-wide decarbonisation.
Uber offers no benefits
Uber offers benefits to all eligible European drivers and couriers—including parental and sick leave, free injury cover, and more. At zero cost for them. Social protection is essential to the success their business as well as ours. When drivers and couriers feel secure and supported, they give a better service to customers and our business thrives.
Uber is more than just a platform; we’re driving sustainability, supporting local businesses, and creating economic opportunity. We’re excited about our journey so far and even more thrilled about what lies ahead. And we know that we have more work to do.
