UberGIVING – Blow the Whistle

A few months ago we launched with UberGIVING. This campaign involved donating a percentage of each trip to the Reach for a Dream Foundation, to help fulfil the dreams of children faced with life-threatening illnesses. It was an astounding success, and a real difference was made to this organisation.

Due to the great results we decided to continue helping organisations, on an ongoing basis. Last month was Women’s Month in South Africa with the 9th August declared as National Women’s Day. We thought it only fitting to donate the contributions raised in August to the Blow the Whistle initiative, whose focus is to give women and children the platforms they need to feel safe in South Africa.

Starting with fashionable, physical whistles and a state-of-the-art mobile app, the initiative is making sure that women never have to feel alone. The campaign not only seeks to give women a voice, but also encourages men and other citizens to react to the call of need, activating the community to work together against crime.

The concept behind the whistle is that a woman or child is able to blow it for help whenever they feel vulnerable. The proceeds of the sales are channelled to the DNA Project and the development of DNA forensic technology. ‘Blow The Whistle’ has also built a groundbreaking app, which users can download from their app store. The primary purpose of the app is to provide a personal panic button that can be used wherever you feel vulnerable. Download the app on your Android or Apple device.

What is UberGIVING? Previously we automatically rounded down the value of your trip to the nearest rand. We’re now leaving the value of the trip as is and contributing the extra amount to non-profit organisations. In keeping with the business model, our partner-drivers will still earn 80% of each fare. These small amounts donated from each riders trip, although a few cents here and there, when combined with riders across the country become a significant contribution.
