Staff Network Engineer
About the Role
The Uber Global Network Infrastructure team is looking for a Staff Network Engineer with deep expertise in Cloud Networking across major public cloud providers and a solid foundation in on-premises backbone and data center networking. This role centers on designing, building, and managing Uber’s production network — with Cloud networking as the primary focus and on-prem backbone and DC networking as a foundational discipline.
You will combine a strong command of cloud-native networking primitives with hands-on experience in on-prem environments to create resilient, high-performance infrastructure that powers Uber’s global business. If you value simplicity, thrive in a fast-paced collaborative environment, and are excited to both teach and learn, we’d love to talk.
- Design, build, and operate next-generation cloud network solutions across major public cloud providers — including VPC architecture, inter-region connectivity, cloud security controls, and cloud-native load balancing.
- Architect and maintain on-premises backbone and data center networks that complement and interconnect with cloud environments in a 24/7 production setting.
- Ensure network availability, performance, and future scalability through automation-first engineering.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering and Business organizations across multiple domains to develop and implement network-based solutions supporting Uber’s global growth.
- Research emerging cloud and network technologies and bring practical applications to production.
---- What the Candidate Will Do ----
- Lead the design, deployment, and operation of production cloud networking across major public cloud providers.
- Architect and maintain on-premises backbone and data center network fabrics as a complementary discipline, ensuring seamless integration with cloud environments.
- Apply an automation-first mindset to build and extend frameworks that deploy and modify cloud and on-prem networking primitives, auto-mitigate common failures, and continuously improve operational health at scale.
- Partner with stakeholders across Engineering and Business to identify, scope, and drive new production designs for cloud networking, backbone, transit, and data center environments.
- Participate in a 24/7/365 global on-call rotation and lead blameless post-mortem processes to drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams on projects, new functionality, and troubleshooting complex operational issues.
--- Basic Qualifications ----
- 7+ years of network engineering and operational experience in production environments, including 3+ years designing, deploying, and/or operating Cloud networking across one or more major public cloud providers, with a strong automation-first mindset and a track record of using software to scale and simplify network operations.
---- Preferred Qualifications ----
- Deep expertise across one or more major public cloud providers, with hands-on command of core networking primitives: VPC design, dedicated interconnects, transit gateway / hub-spoke topologies.
- Hands-on experience with large-scale on-premises backbone and DC networking (spine/leaf, BGP, IS-IS, MPLS).
- Passionate about leveraging software to automate network management, improve network observability, and remediate problems before they impact production.
- Experience with Go or Python for network automation tooling, infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD pipelines targeting network infrastructure.
- Experience with network observability tooling (streaming telemetry, gNMI, custom dashboards, alerting).
- Proven ability to lead operational excellence through best-practice change management, outage mitigation, and blameless post-mortem processes.
- Great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a portfolio of successful execution. Open-minded to various technical approaches and able to drive consensus across diverse stakeholders.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$211,000 per year - USD$234,000 per year.
