Sr. Staff Engineer - Earner

About the Role

The Earner Financials group is a foundational part of Uber’s Earner organization. Our mission is to enable Uber to be the most reliable and rewarding earnings platform for drivers and couriers across the globe. This organization spans four mission-critical verticals:

  1. Earnings: Transparency and reliability in how earners are paid.
  2. Benefits: A growing portfolio of products that improve earners' quality of life.
  3. Subscription: Subscription model offerings tailored to high-engagement earners.
  4. Tipping: Experiences that foster appreciation from riders to earners.

We are seeking a Senior Staff Engineer (L6) to lead the technical direction and architecture across all verticals in the Earner Financials space. You will be the technical voice for systems that are under intense regulatory scrutiny, responsible for ensuring absolute accuracy, auditability, compliance, and resilience in every transaction. You’ll be driving engineering direction in one of the most sensitive and high-stakes domains at Uber.

---- What the Candidate Will Do ----

  1. Define and execute the technical vision for the Earner Financials organization across Earnings, Benefits, Subscription, and Tipping.
  2. Lead engineering efforts to ensure regulatory compliance, audit readiness, and strict financial controls are baked into systems by design.
  3. Architect robust, scalable, and extensible financial systems that ensure payment accuracy, compliance with local regulations and global standards, and real-time transparency.
  4. Partner closely with engineering managers, engineering leads, data science, product design, product management, legal, policy and operations teams to translate business rules and regulatory requirements into resilient, scalable software.
  5. Identify and proactively address systemic risks in platform integrity, financial data pipelines, and earnings and benefits calculation.
  6. Champion technical excellence in observability, monitoring, testing, and incident response for all financial services.
  7. Mentor and guide engineers and leads across the Earner Financials org to raise the technical bar and build a culture focused on correctness, reliability, and simplicity.
  8. Lead multi-quarter, cross-functional engineering initiatives and align stakeholders across technical and non-technical domains.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

  1. 15+ years of engineering experience, with a focus on large-scale, distributed systems.
  2. Expertise in designing and maintaining transactional systems with strong guarantees around correctness, auditability, and transparency.
  3. Deep understanding of software engineering principles and backend technologies (Java, Go preferred).
  4. Experience navigating complex regulatory environments and compliance-heavy architectures, including working with legal, operations or risk teams.
  5. Proven success in leading technical strategies and cross-team initiatives across organizations.
  6. Clear communicator, able to convey complex technical issues to stakeholders across engineering, legal, product, and operations.

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

  1. Domain experience in payments, fintech, financial infrastructure, or compliance-intensive systems.
  2. Track record of building systems that passed regulatory audits, compliance assessments, or financial reconciliations.
  3. Deep experience with reliability-focused engineering practices: SLOs, error budgeting, audit trails, incident handling, and system instrumentation.
  4. Contributions to internal engineering frameworks or external technical communities.
  5. Familiarity with GDPR, SOC2, PCI-DSS, or other compliance frameworks is a plus.
