Staff Technical Program Manager, AV Labs

Technical Program Manager, Engineering
in Sunnyvale, California
- Full Time

About the Role

Join Uber as a Staff Technical Program Manager to help spearhead AV Labs, a newly formed, high-velocity team of multidisciplinary experts tasked with building the foundational capabilities for our next chapter in AV. In this Staff-level role, you will lead the overarching technical program strategy to leverage our massive distribution and data infrastructure advantage. You will partner with senior engineering leaders across ML, computer vision, data systems, and infrastructure to define multi-year roadmaps and navigate extreme ambiguity. Your work will go beyond complex project execution; you will pioneer the shared technical foundations that accelerate our AV partners, inform critical strategy and investment decisions with technical depth, and ensure Uber retains the foundational expertise to move faster as the space evolves.

What the Candidate Will Do:

  1. Define Multi-Year Strategy: Define the overarching technical program strategy and multi-year roadmaps for AV Labs. Partner with senior leadership across ML, infrastructure, and operations to navigate extreme ambiguity in the rapidly evolving autonomy landscape.
  2. Pioneer Execution at Scale: Drive the inception and execution of zero-to-one L4 data platforms. Oversee execution excellence across the entire AV Labs portfolio, anticipating systemic bottlenecks and untangling highly complex cross-company dependencies.
  3. Shape Architecture and Decisions: Leverage deep technical expertise in massive-scale data systems and end-to-end modeling to influence system architecture, resolve deep technical disagreements among principal engineers, and inform critical investment decisions.
  4. Drive Executive Alignment: Lead without formal authority by heavily influencing executive leaders and stakeholders. Champion effective communication by routinely presenting technical strategies, program statuses, and investment recommendations in large, senior-level forums with clarity and impact.
  5. Elevate the TPM Organization: Act as a force multiplier for the TPM org by creating and sharing best-in-class frameworks, templates, and processes that prevent teams from "reinventing the wheel." Mentor Senior TPMs and define world-class TPM best practices for AV Labs.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Proven experience of 6+ years as a TPM or Engineering Manager at an Autonomous Vehicle technology development environment with an overall experience of 12+ years.
  2. Strong technical experience in platform development at scale.
  3. Solid technical aptitude and an ability to understand technical designs, challenges, and risks. Engineers enjoy working closely with you.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional emotional intelligence.
  5. Proven strong cross-team and cross-org stakeholder management. Ability to influence, motivate, and align people across a broad variety of job functions through your relationships.
  6. Strong organizational skills to juggle many tasks without losing sight of the highest priority items.
  7. Analytical and truth seeking. Ability to understand complex concepts and make reasoned decisions objectively.
  8. Data driven: Experience determining effective program KPI's, inclusive of both technical and business OKRs, and using them to measure program success and issues. Strong technical, analytical, and quantitative skills with the ability to use data and metrics to back up assumptions, recommendations, and drive decisions.
  9. Experienced in project management. Familiar with both Agile and Waterfall methodologies and able to apply them where best suited.
  10. Detail-oriented with the ability to thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments where priorities are constantly evolving as the business grows and adapts globally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, related quantitative subject area.
  2. Developer experience, including writing, testing, and deploying code.
  3. Experienced with large-scale change management and implementing culture for engineering organizations.
  4. Built standards and frameworks adopted by large engineering organizations.
  5. Experience contributing to experimentation design, implementation, analysis, and launch recommendations.
