About the Role

The Capacity & Efficiency Engineering (CEE) organization is looking for a Senior staff Software Engineer to join us . As a Senior staff Software Engineer, you will define a holistic vision and build deep, granular insights of our technology infrastructure consumption along with cost accountability. You'll build and enhance our capacity analytics products that help drive our cost-to-serve efficiency programs.

In this role you will work closely with a highly cross-functional team, including platform teams, service owners, finance and various leaders building a broad understanding of Uber’s consumption of resources across its entire tech stack, identify cost-savings opportunities and develop software guiding key business decisions to grow Uber’s infrastructure in the cloud while driving down costs.\\

You will act as a technical leader across the Capacity enegineering domain, focusing on the core platform components that enable frictionless experiences.

Engineering Excellence & Reliability

Work with teams across Uber to identify their capacity needs, help scale services and platforms within our capacity budget and find opportunities to make Uber more efficient.

You will build products and services that are highly available and scalable to serve our customers.

As a Sr. Staff engineer, you will architect, design, and build essential analytics infrastructure providing visibility and actionability into engineering spend for the entire organization.

You will collaborate with other teammates to maintain the health of our systems and codebase, refactor and make improvements, and keep our systems robust and resilient.

Write clear documentation so that other engineers can partner to contribute and deliver.

Collaboration and Technical Leadership

  1. Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and Risk Engineers to balance competing priorities and drive high-impact engineering projects from inception to production.
  2. Mentorship and Coaching: Set the bar for technical quality. Provide high-quality code and design review feedback, and actively mentor peers on complex distributed systems, coding best practices, and Uber's engineering frameworks.
  3. Influence and Alignment: Act as a spokesperson for the CEE , influencing technical direction across your organization and with others stakeholders.
  4. Leadership: You will lead charters and sometimes end-to-end projects.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

You are a Senior Staff Engineer and a seasoned expert in distributed backend systems and data engineering who solves complex, large-scale problems with both engineering prowess and a deep understanding of the human and commercial context.

  1. Expert Backend/data Technologist: You have extensive experience in backend/data development (typically 10+ years), with a proven ability to design, build, and scale world-class high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems.
  2. Cross-team collaboration, mentoring, and influencing technical direction across an organization.
  3. Strategic Visionary: You align architectural decisions with broader organizational goals while maintaining compliance and security.
  4. Language Proficiency: Highly efficient coding in Golang, Java, Python or similar equivalent languages.
  5. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills: with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to technical and non-technical audiences. This is especially important in the age of AI.

  1. AI Proficiency: At Uber, we’re an AI-first company and use various AI tools (both in-house and commercial) to augment our productivity.
  2. Data-Driven Owner: Deep experience with A/B experimentation frameworks and practices, with the ability to reason beyond simple green/red metrics to interpret and implement solutions that drive long-term impact.
