Program Manager, Organizational Safety, Autonomous Mobility & Delivery
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Organizational Safety Program Manager to support the establishment and implementation of a safety management program targeted to multi-partner fleet operations in the fast-evolving field of autonomous mobility and delivery at Uber. This role requires strong understanding of the core concepts of a safety management system (SMS) as tailored to autonomous vehicle operations both with and without vehicle operators (i.e. rider only or driverless) and knowledge of the relevant industry standards that inform these activities.
In this role, you will support the operationalization of Uber AM&D’s safety management program, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and AV partner standards, including partner certification expectations. This is a highly cross-functional role that requires strong program management skills and technical knowledge of industry standards. The successful candidate will have direct experience establishing and implementing safety management processes, embedding the processes across operations, conducting compliance oversight activities, and maintaining an effective compliance monitoring program with clear visibility into safety and regulatory adherence.
What the Candidate Will Do
- Safety Management Expertise: Support Uber’s internal stakeholders and external partners on the best practices, lessons learned and pitfalls associated with the implementation of safety management systems specific to autonomous vehicles, including the four pillars of Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion.
- Compliance Oversight: In partnership with Legal, operationalize safety and regulatory compliance monitoring processes to maintain compliance with internal policies, operational procedures, and external partner and regulatory requirements.
- Program Management: Manage safety management programs from inception to operations, ensuring adherence to timelines, key milestones, and strategic objectives. Support cross-functional teams and external partners on organizational safety matters.
- Partner Engagement: Work closely with Uber’s AV partners and fleet operators to understand their requirements for operations on the Uber platform and creatively problem solve for mutually successful outcomes.
- Cross-functional Leadership: Collaborate with many different skilled individuals across Uber, including business development, fleet, product, legal, policy, safety operations, engineering, and regional operations teams.
- Industry Awareness: Stays current with relevant industry best practices, standards, and trends, such as Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC) and SAE, is a member of professional safety associations and has a strong network of safety professionals for best practice sharing.
Basic Qualifications
- Safety Management Expertise: A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in implementing and managing safety management programs in a transportation sector, such as AV, aviation, rail, maritime, etc.
- Compliance Oversight: Experience in conducting safety and regulatory compliance audits, such as internal audits and vendor audits, and working with regulatory agencies and industry safety audits.
- Program Management: Proven track record managing safety programs, particularly at an AV developer, with experience leading cross-functional and cross-industry teams.
- Communication & Relationship Building: Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across different cultures and industries.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields
- Experience working with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) or other SMS frameworks
- Experience performing data analysis and statistical analysis of operational safety data to generate safety performance indicators
- Experience presenting to federal, state and local regulators on the safety-related programs and activities
- A continuous improvement approach, with a history of quick adaptation and self-directed learning
- A passion for creating empathetic, inspiring, and innovative transportation solutions in pursuit of positive societal outcomes
For Chicago, IL-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$118,000 per year - USD$131,000 per year.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$131,000 per year - USD$145,500 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$131,000 per year - USD$145,500 per year.
For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$118,000 per year - USD$131,000 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$131,000 per year - USD$145,500 per year.
For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$131,000 per year - USD$145,500 per year.
For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp.
