Our mission is to deliver a seamless, "One Account" experience that serves as the heartbeat of the Uber ecosystem. Whether a user is hailing a ride, ordering a meal, or managing a fleet, their digital identity is the thread that connects them to our services.

Our work sits at the intersection of high-scale distributed systems, world-class UX, and rigorous security. You will oversee a portfolio of projects that touch every corner of Uber’s business:

  1. The Global Gateway: Designing dynamic, frictionless signup and login flows that handle multiple identifier types—from social and email to phone—ensuring every user can enter the Uber world effortlessly.
  2. Security at Scale: Implementing sophisticated 2FA and multi-factor authentication systems that protect users without adding unnecessary "clutter" to their experience.
  3. Unified Identity Management: Building the tools that allow users to manage their digital selves, from account settings to privacy preferences, across all Lines of Business (LOBs).
  4. The Platform: Leading the architectural evolution of our identity stack to support Uber’s future growth, ensuring it remains resilient, compliant, and lightning-fast.

As we embark on the next generation of our identity platform, we are looking for a visionary Senior Manager to lead this transformation and redefine how identity scales at a global tech giant. This is a high-leverage leadership role where your decisions will ripple across the entire company. As the Senior Manager for Consumer Identity, you will:

  1. Lead a Strategic Evolution: You won't just maintain a legacy system; you will own the execution and landing of our platform's next version, setting the technical and product roadmap for years to come.
  2. Enable Global Growth: Your team’s work is the prerequisite for Uber’s expansion. By streamlining identity, you directly enable essential risk, payments, safety, and support systems to function at peak performance.
  3. Drive Innovation in Privacy & Security: In an era where digital identity is paramount, you will be at the forefront of building secure, compliant systems that respect user privacy while providing a personalized experience.
  4. Mentor & Scale: You will lead a high-performing team of engineers and product thinkers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and user-centricity.

What You'll Do

  1. Technical Strategy and Execution: Define and drive the comprehensive technical strategy and multi-year plan for Consumer Identity.
  2. Security and Trust: Champion the use of industry standards like Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and Passkeys to ensure secure account access and build user trust on the platform.
  3. Principle Governance: Enforce and evolve the unified signup and login principles, ensuring flow consistency, preventing product-specific customizations, and maintaining a unified look and feel to mitigate fraud risks (e.g., phishing).
  4. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product teams to gather insights on flow performance, address data-driven issues, and communicate the foundational concepts of Consumer Identity and the rationale behind evolving standards. Work with stakeholders and multi-functional teams to lead planning and execution through a full product cycle
  5. Feature Enhancement: Lead the development and integration of new authentication factors (e.g., WhatsApp OTP, Passkeys) and challenge flows to improve user experience and funnel conversion.Lead a product and platform area to deliver best in class Uber account experience, ensuring that users can create, access and manage their identity across Uber and affiliated third parties.
  6. Customer centric: Enable users to seamlessly access and use Uber in a personalized way. Help Uber build a relationship with users while enabling risk, payments, safety & support systems to work. Blog post covering part of Uber sign-up and login stack and experience.
  7. Partner with engineering teams, help see opportunities, gather requirements, and help shape the technology roadmap and vision for the team. Lean on technical experience to facilitate technical decision making and raise the bar on the team’s engineering craft.
  8. Hire high-quality engineering talent, lead and develop your team
  9. Develop an operational model to achieve operational excellence for engineering and product metrics

Basic Qualifications

  1. Experience executing against high-stakes business goals and extensive engineering priorities.
  2. Experience partnering across functions and organizational boundaries to effectively advocate for team, business, and company priorities.
  3. Experience with analytical or optimization problem spaces and strong collaboration with data science and machine learning functions.
  4. A strong ability to shepherd the design and implementation of robust, high-scale systems and to challenge engineers to develop extensible and reusable solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  1. 15+ years of software engineering experience, with 7+ years as an engineering manager and people leader
  2. A strong business sense and ability to challenge and partner with product managers and business stakeholders.
  3. A track record of delivering results in fast-paced and highly ambiguous environments.
  4. Excellent communication and analytical ability to understand the business value of engineering decisions and articulate a narrative about their importance.
  5. Experience building services platforms like Identity, Payments, Support.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$267,000 per year - USD$297,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$267,000 per year - USD$297,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
