Staff Software Engineer - Backend

About the Role

Rider Growth is a new and emerging line of business in Uber with the mission to help increase the rate of customer acquisition, decrease rate of customer retention, and increase revenue by a) optimising existing products and

b) building new products

We're looking for passionate Backend developers to join Rider Growth team, a cross-functional group in which Design, Data Science, Backend, Android and iOS engineers work collaboratively to design and build products for riders to simplify their booking journey as well as build products from scratch to help new users complete their booking journey via other mediums such as WhatsApp and Phone call.

---- What the Candidate Will Do ----

  1. Architecting and Designing Systems: You’ll lead the architecture of distributed backend systems, balancing scalability, security, and cost efficiency. They also design and implement large-scale tools and systems that are reliable and performant.
  2. Coding and Development: Writing high-quality, maintainable code is a core part of the job. This includes designing, coding, testing, and launching backend services and APIs at a global scale. You are also expected to "abstract and refactor" code as a passion, not a chore.
  3. Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Staff Engineers are expected to set the technical vision for their team and mentor junior engineers. You’ll be responsible for conducting code reviews, participating in design discussions, and finding opportunities to improve team processes and promote standard practices.
  4. Collaboration and Strategy: You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers and business stakeholders, to deliver solutions that drive business impact. This role involves aligning the team on solutions to ambiguous problems and analyzing trade-offs of different technical approaches.

Operational Excellence: A key responsibility is to drive ongoing efficiency and reliability improvements through design and automation. This includes contributing to on-call practices, quality, and monitoring.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

  1. Grit, drive and a deep feeling of ownership.
  2. 10+ years hands on experience in developing highly scalable backend micro-services using technologies such as Java and Go.
  3. Familiarity with concepts of distributed systems and microservice architecture.
  4. Experience analysing a feature in production using analytics and experiments
  5. Experience collaborating on projects and working efficiently as part of a team
  6. Thriving in ambiguity and having a go-getter attitude

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

  1. Proven track record of building and operating highly reliable distributed systems at scale.
  2. Passionate about pursuing technical excellence and mentoring other engineers.
  3. Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring technologies.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
