On Sunday, 18 April 2021, a fire rampaged through the University of Cape Town (UCT) and surrounding areas, destroying large parts of the university and leaving many students without a place of residence. Some students have lost everything – including clothing, toiletries, food and other essential items. They are in need of help from their community!
From Monday, 19 April to 10:00PM, Tuesday, 20 April, you can request an Uber and a driver will come to your doorstep, pick up your donations and deliver them directly to the UCT SRC and Gift of the Givers drop-off point in Cape Town (Old Mutual Mutual Park, Pinelands) – free of charge! For those who want to donate much-needed essential items, simply enter the promo code UBERCOMMUNITYCT in your Uber app. This offers you 1 free trip (up to R250) for all trips ending at 91 Jan Smuts Drive, Pinelands until 10PM on Tuesday, 20th April 2021.
What they need:
- Non-perishable food items, energy drinks, long life milk, instant coffee, tea and water
- General toiletries, including sanitary pads, soap and toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Face masks andSanitiser
- Adult clothing
- Towels
How it works:
- Open the Uber app.
- Tap the Menu icon on the top left-hand corner.
- Select ‘Wallet’ and scroll down and tap ‘Add Promo Code’.
- Enter UBERCOMMUNITYCT and tap ‘Add’.
- Tap ‘Where to’ and enter ‘Old Mutual Mutual Park, Pinelands’.
- Request a ride as usual.
- When the driver arrives – please meet him or her at your pick up point with your donations. Don’t forget to wear a mask or facial covering
- The driver will then deliver them directly to the UCT SRC and Gift of the Givers drop-off point(s) in Cape Town.
The Finer Details
Offer applies to the first 20,000 users who apply the promotion code. Offer applies to existing users of the Uber App. Valid for up to 1 trip. Offer valid from 19 April 2021 and, regardless of when the promotional code is applied, offer will automatically terminate at 22:00 on 20 April 2021. Promo code valid between 09:00, 19 April 2021 – 22:00, 20 April 2021. Restrictions: (i) Offer valid in South Africa only where the Uber App is available and; (ii) Maximum discount for this Offer is R250. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Please keep in mind that drivers can’t leave vehicles unattended, so we ask that you bring your items out to meet your driver when they arrive.
