Transport can be pretty costly, especially when you’re travelling on a daily basis. Whether you drive to work every day, take a mixture of public transport to get around the city or just are often making long journeys, it can become too expensive all too quickly. We can help cut the costs with the affordable UberX service, but we also have some extra tips on how to save money with Uber.

Refer a friend
Of course, the best tip for how to save money on Uber rides is to get one for free! If one of your friends is not yet an Uber user, you can share your Uber referral code with them to score some free rides. Your friend will get their first ride free, and your next ride in any city that shares the same currency as your friend’s will be free. If you’re ready to refer, all you have to do is:
- Open the Uber app or visit riders.uber.com and log in.
- Go to the “Free Rides” tab to find your code and pass it to a friend.
- When they create an account and enter the code, they’ll receive a free ride.
- Once they use their free ride, you’ll also receive a free ride
Travel together and split the fare
If you are wondering how to make Uber cheaper, taking a group trip is not only more fun, but it’s also less expensive. If you’re catching a ride with your friends, swipe up from the bottom of the app and tap “Split Fare” – from there you can enter the names or phone numbers of your friends to connect their accounts to the trip. Once the trip finishes, you’ll split the fare evenly. It also means you don’t have to mess around with who paid what and swapping change after the ride. If you’ve got a very large group, why not take UberXL? That way you can split the fare with up to 6 people or more!

Remember dynamic pricing
When you’re planning that budget Friday-day night outing, it’s good to know what the cheapest time to get an Uber ride is. Our dynamic pricing system ensures there are always enough drivers on the road to serve demand, but that may also mean a temporary increase in fare price at busy times. This usually includes Friday and weekend nights, festival days or when you’re near big events. You could plan your travel around lowest Uber fare time or, if that’s not an option, leave time in your plans to sit out a possible fare increase, whether that’s with a good book or another round of drinks!
Pick the right ride
If you’re wanting to find the cheapest Uber option, make sure you order the right service. Our UberX service will always be cheaper than an UberBlack, but if you’re heading out with a big group, UberXL can be a way to split the fare for even bigger savings. Or, if you’re in Port Elizabeth, you can grab an UberGO for a super-cheap ride across town, perfect for errands and quick trips to the shops.
Ride-share full-time
There’s fewer things pricier than owning a car – between insurance, maintenance and fuel, the costs quickly pile up, even if you don’t drive it very often. If you’re an infrequent driver who’s still paying for a vehicle, why not migrate your travel onto Uber full-time? You’ll get back a healthy chunk between the cut vehicle costs and extra cash from selling the car on. You’ll also be helping our vision for a future that’s better for the environment, cities and people by taking more cars off the road.
So, the next time you’re planning a trip or requesting a ride, keep in mind our advice on how to save money with Uber to make your Rand go further!
