Introducing UberX Share

On October 13, the UberX Share trial will officially kick-off in Kyiv. To prepare you for the launch, here are answers to some of the top questions we’ve heard from driver-partners.

What is UberX Share?

UberX Share is a new ride option that allows riders heading in a similar direction to share a ride if we find them a match. If there is a match, the riders can get cash back and ride cheaper than they would have on an UberX trip.

Who can receive UberX Share trips?

The requirements are the same for driver-partners and vehicles as for regular UberX trips. 

Can I opt-out of UberX Share?

Driver-partners cannot opt-out of receiving UberX Share trip requests while they are receiving UberX requests. However, whether you accept a new UberX Share trip request is your choice. 

What are the operating times and areas for UberX Share in Kyiv?

There are no time or service area restrictions for UberX Share.

Why are you trialling UberX Share in Kyiv?

Affordable shared rides mean more riders using the app, which can lead to more trips, less downtime, and more overall earnings for you.

Fares with UberX Share

How do earnings with UberX Share compare to UberX?

Fares are structured so that how much you earn on an UberX Share trip – from picking up your first rider to dropping off your last – is comparable to what you’d earn on an UberX trip of the similar time and distance. If we don’t find a match during an UberX Share, the rider takes a usual UberX trip and you will earn the standard fare for an UberX trip. 

How are fares calculated for trips that find a match?

Each rider that you pick up on a UberX Share trip will pay an upfront fare and each upfront fare will have its own Uber service fee. If the trip converts to a shared ride, we adjust the upfront fare. To help keep your earnings on UberX Share trips comparable with those on UberX, the service fee varies as more riders (i.e. more upfront fares) are added to your trip.

You’ll be able to see the upfront fare for each rider – plus the updated Uber service fee – in your waybill, found in the Trip Planner section of your Driver app.

If I take a different route for my UberX Share trip than the one suggested by the Driver app, is the fare or service fee adjusted?

UberX Share upfront fares are rarely adjusted. This is because riders cannot change their pickup or drop-off locations after requesting a UberX Share trip.

Does surge impact UberX Share trips?

Yes, it does. UberX Share surge is linked to UberX surge. This means that if UberX prices surge, UberX Share does too – by the same multiplier.

Does UberX Share count as one or two trips for branding bonus? 

2 trips will be calculated towards your branding bonus target. 

Safety

Will taking UberX Share trips mean I need to use my phone more on the road?

When additional riders are added to your UberX Share trip, they are done so automatically. This means you can keep your attention on the road and don’t have to worry about interacting with your phone to accept additional pickups.

Is UberX Share safe?

The same safety features and support that are available on all Uber trips are still available on UberX Share – from 24/7 support to the in-app Safety Toolkit. 

Respect is the foundation of the Uber community and if a rider behaves poorly or breaches the Community Guidelines, we encourage drivers to let us know in the Help section of their Driver app so we take appropriate action. Please also note that the sanitary requirements and recommendations relating to masks, vehicle cleaning, etc. that are currently applicable to UberX, also apply to UberX Share.

Do face cover requirements apply to UberX Share?

We want everyone to feel safe while driving or riding with Uber. That’s why we ask all riders and drivers to wear a face mask on every trip. Please, follow the rules and cover your mouth and nose on every ride.

UberX Share pickups and dropoffs

Can riders change their destination after requesting an UberX Share trip?

Riders cannot change their pickup or dropoff locations after requesting an UberX Share trip. We will have email communications and messages in the Uber rider app to let riders know this. 

How many riders are allowed on an UberX Share trip?

Riders can only request an UberX Share trip if they are traveling alone. If a rider tries to bring along additional riders, you can cancel the trip and kindly suggest they request an UberX ride instead.

What if my rider is not at the pickup location?

Riders will be notified when you are at the pickup location and will have two minutes to meet you. If your rider hasn’t arrived after two minutes, you can cancel the trip – just select ‘Rider no show’. You will receive a cancellation fee, which you will see in your weekly pay statement.

You can always consider calling the rider after waiting a minute or so to check in.

What do I do if a rider cancels?

If a rider is added to your trip but then cancels, your current UberX Share trip will still continue. Keep following the in-app navigation to your next pickup or dropoff location.

How do ratings work for UberX Share?

At the end of an UberX Share trip, you rate each rider separately. The rating screen will appear in the app once you’ve dropped off all your riders – there’s no need to rate riders mid-trip.

Similarly, each rider has the option to provide a rating after they take an UberX Share trip. When a rider gives a rating lower than 5, they are shown a list of possible reasons. If the rider selects an option that is out of your control, such as “Route by Uber”, it won’t count toward your overall rating.

We also exclude the option to rate trips from riders who consistently give lower ratings.

Do I have to use Uber Navigation?

You may use your preferred navigation app, but Uber Navigation is recommended for UberX Share trips. This is for two key reasons:

If you are an iPhone user, you can choose to use Uber Navigation for UberX Share and other navigation apps for trips with UberX. Simply go to “Account” in your Driver app, tap “App Settings” then “Navigation” to make the change.

How are tolls calculated in an UberX Share trip?

All tolls will be added onto a rider’s fare. Riders will pay for their own tolls if they ride by themselves, or split them equally with every rider who is in the car at the time the toll is incurred.

How are you educating riders about UberX Share?

We have several marketing campaigns planned for the UberX Share launch to increase rider awareness and understanding. 

What if my rider wants me to decline an additional passenger pickup?

You can kindly remind the rider that they have opted to share their ride with other riders for a more affordable fare. If they prefer to have a private ride or are running late, you can offer to end their trip early and suggest they request an UberX.

What if my rider requests UberX Share by mistake?

If your rider didn’t mean to request UberX Share, kindly ask that they cancel their trip and request UberX instead.
