After several months of talks with the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC), Uber has decided to transition its operating model to work under the government’s Multi Purpose Taxi scheme.  We will work with the taxi industry and serve Multi Purpose Taxi fleets as a technology platform. This is the second time Uber has changed its operating model under the government’s guidance, and it reinforces our commitment to be a good partner to Taiwan.

We recognize the Tsai administration’s support for technology and innovation, and its determination to put this at the heart of transportation policy in Taiwan. We are also encouraged by Minister Lin’s forward looking transportation policies, including to incorporate app-based metering, upfront pricing, and democratizing cross-city vehicle plates to the Multi Purpose Taxi model.

We will continue to work closely with the MOTC to ensure that drivers and rental car companies transitioning to the new model have enough time to do so smoothly, noting the importance of ensuring they can acquire taxi driver licenses and vehicle plates.

Under the new model, riders won’t see any change to the app experience or the service they have been used to.

We look forward to writing the next chapter of Uber’s history in Taiwan, together with riders, drivers, cities, and partners in the local transportation industry.
