Vivian brought her experience working overseas back home to join Uber Taiwan
July 20, 2023 / GlobalVivian Chiu, Enterprise Advertising Manager, relocated back home to Taiwan to join Uber. Here’s how she brought her experience gained overseas to make an impact in her new role and why she feels energized working at Uber Taiwan.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your career before Uber
“I’m originally from Taiwan, but before joining Uber, I lived and worked in Malaysia for almost 5 years. I relocated there for an advertising project I was assigned to through my employer at the time, and after that I moved into ad sales for a popular music streaming app in Southeast Asia. Most of my experience in Malaysia was in ad sales and business development, so that gave me the opportunity to initiate partnerships with many different kinds of brands. When COVID hit, I had already been thinking about relocating back home to Taiwan, so when I got an invitation from Uber to have a casual chat about new opportunities in Taiwan, I totally went for it!”
What was your interview experience like with Uber?
“My interview process with Uber was very smooth, and I felt a lot of transparency as I was speaking with all the key stakeholders I would be expected to work with in my role. In total, I went through three rounds of interviews, and everyone was very open with me about the expectations and the challenges that may arise. The Uber leadership team really took the time to understand the breadth of my experience and the value that I could add to the business. By the end of the interview process, I was more convinced than ever that Uber was the right choice for me.”
Tell us about what it’s like working at Uber Taiwan
“Working at Uber Taiwan is an extraordinary experience that goes far beyond the confines of a typical workplace. It’s a place where surprises await around every corner, where driven minds come together to create impactful solutions. The diversity of backgrounds and the stories shared by colleagues serve as constant sources of inspiration, energizing us to overcome challenges and achieve personal growth. At Uber Taiwan, work is not just about the tasks; it’s about finding self-realization and making a difference in the world.”
What does a typical day look like for you?
“I am currently working as an Enterprise Advertising Manager, focusing on driving increased advertising adoption rates on the Uber Eats platform for the larger restaurant brands that we work with. On a daily basis, I review sales revenue and the potential pipeline of brands I work on with the Enterprise Account Managers. I also keep track of all the in-progress ads that we have implemented. Beyond that, I spend time creating Go-to-Market strategies to prepare and assist our Account Managers with their pitches to our Restaurant Partners.”
What’s been the one project so far that you’ve really enjoyed working on?
“During my time at Uber, I’ve had the opportunity to work on various projects, big and small. Among them, one experience stands out vividly in my memory: organizing a Global Advertising training session for the Taiwan Sales Team. To ensure the training material met the specific needs of the team, we began by conducting surveys and actively seeking input from the sales representatives. By aligning their requirements with the expertise of the APAC Sales Enablement Team, Global Advertising Team, and the Regional Lead for the tooling we use to optimize the solutions we provide to our advertisers, we developed a comprehensive training curriculum.
This involved extensive collaboration and meticulous planning, resulting in a highly interactive and impactful workshop. Given that the adoption of advertising is pivotal for both our Restaurant Partners and Uber’s success, it forms a significant part of our global sales strategy. The insights gained from this training enables us to drive advertising adoption, enhance customer engagement, and achieve tangible business results.”
What Uber value resonates with you the most and why?
“Of course, it’s Go get it! I am a very passionate person, and to me, Uber’s Go get it spirit is not just an idea or a concept – it is what keeps me grounded and pushes me to really turn my ideas into a reality and make things happen.”
Uber Advertising is growing in North Asia, do you have any advice to share with someone thinking about joining?
“Be brave and take risks! Uber gives you a lot of freedom and autonomy, so we are encouraged to take risks and learn how best to navigate within situations of ambiguity when we work.”
What is your Uber rating?
“A solid 4.9!”
