A bit about me
My name is Jason and I’m a freelance musician, videographer and an Uber driver-partner here in Trinidad.
I’m a musician and live to create. It’s in my blood and I have been making music for as long as I can remember. My Grandfather first taught me how to play the ‘Quatro’ and guitar as a young boy, which definitely nurtured my musical passions and has been with me throughout my entire life. I even used to play in a ‘Parang’ band around Christmas time for many years (I still do when asked).
I’m a devoted family man living with my wife, two daughters and son. Their safety always comes first. My kids are now at the age where they need to be taken to school and to their respective extra curricula activities, and not having a car during these crucial times would never stop me from doing my all.
For many years I didn’t have a car of my own and the unpredictability of public transportation, especially living outside of Port of Spain really motivated me to finally get one. Now I have a ‘brand spanking’ new Nissan Sentra that I use with the Uber app and I’ve never looked back.
How did I learn about Uber?
A friend of mine started driving with Uber and convinced me that I should do the same.
I actually work on the same street as the Uber Green Light Center, so it was impossible to miss the opportunity or to stop thinking about becoming a Driver-Partner.
Do I have any favorite stories?
I once picked up a rider who was going to Maracas Beach in the middle of the week. We chatted for the entire time before he realized that he would need a ride back to Port of Spain for a particular time. I decided to ease his nerves, so I just stayed on the beach and hung-out with him. Regrettably I didn’t have my swimming gear, but since that day, I always have my beach bag packed in the trunk for these spontaneous beach trips.
What keeps me going?
As a father, my primary concern is always safety and I take this same approach with my Riders. While I have a Rider in my car, I feel a personal responsibility for their wellbeing and ease of mind. Almost like a babysitter. They can plug in their own music, charge their phones and adjust the air-conditioning temperature- it’s all up to them. I always make sure that they feel comfortable and relaxed.
I prefer to work at night when there is no traffic. It’s also when all the limers, musicians and partiers come out. These are the vibrant and electric people I love to be around, and one of the many reasons why I love Uber. Knowing that they are getting to where they want to go to safely, especially during the night makes me feel like I did my part right.
What advice would I give to new Uber drivers?
When I first became an Uber Driver-Partner, I used to look at videos on YouTube to keep high standards and high ratings on the Uber App.
Keeping your car tidy and smelling clean is key, but above all else being a safe driver is the most important thing, especially at night when other drivers may not be as considerate as you.
