In the wake of this year’s historic moment in Saudi Arabia allowing women to obtain drivers licenses, Uber will begin trialing a new option that allows women driver-partners to add a preference within the Uber app that will match them with women riders.
Here are some important details to know about this new option:
This new preference is only available for women driver-partners; male driver-partners will not have this option. When this new preference is selected, we will make our best effort to match women drivers with women riders. However, we cannot guarantee that women-to-women matching will happen every time. In order to help confirm the rider’s identity, drivers can call their riders before picking them up. If a woman driver finds that the rider they have been asked to pick up is a man who is not accompanied by one or more female riders, the woman driver can cancel the ride and use the specific cancellation reason “Rider didn’t match my selected gender preference”.
There will be no negative impact to the woman driver’s rating in these cases. A woman driver-partner may turn off this preference at any time. If a woman driver-partner turns off the preference, a woman driver-partner may be matched with riders of any gender. Selecting this new preference may decrease the number of ride requests that a woman driver-partner receives and may impact the utilization and earnings of such woman driver-partners, since they will, to the extent possible, only be receiving ride requests from women riders.
