Uber is excited to announce two new initiatives coming to New Zealand; a reduced service fee for driver-partners who go electric and the launch of our latest product – Uber Green.
Announcing a reduced service fee for electric vehicles
What’s happening?
Starting 1 July 2023, driver-partners using battery electric vehicles will be eligible for a 50% reduced service fee for all trips using that vehicle up to a maximum value of $5,000 per year until the 30th of June 2025.
Get in quick, because the reduced service fee will only be available to the first 750 driver-partners that upload their battery electric vehicle to Uber. Full eligibility requirements are set out below in the terms and conditions.
What our driver partners have to say
Rosal, a Toyota Camry Hybrid driver-partner from Auckland said:
“When I was looking to buy a car to drive with Uber, I didn’t really consider buying an EV because of the upfront cost. This new programme makes considering an upgrade to an EV more realistic. Petrol and maintenance costs are the most significant part of being a driver and are only set to rise. I’ve already been amazed by the reduced running costs with a hybrid compared to a petrol car and taking the next step to an EV would only make an even bigger difference.”
Daniel, a Nissan Leaf EV driver-partner from Hamilton said:
“I’ve been driving an EV my whole time driving on Uber, but initially I was 50-50 on buying a hybrid instead because the upfront cost seemed out of reach. Making that upfront investment has definitely paid off – my running costs are very low, it’s great to drive around town and the car has been such a good conversation starter with riders. Hopefully this programme helps more drivers make the switch. I have certainly seen the long-term cost benefit and it’s nice to also be able to do my part to reduce emissions.”
- How do I sign up?
Simply add an electric vehicle to your Uber account, and you'll automatically receive the reduced service fee (if slots are still available in the program) for all trips using that vehicle up to the annual cap of $5,000.
If you already have a battery electric vehicle on your Uber account and have used it to take a trip after 1 April 2023, you will also automatically receive the reduced service fee on all trips using that vehicle from 1 July 2023 and up to the annual cap of $5,000.
Introducing Uber Green
Alongside the reduced service fee for battery electric vehicles, we are also excited to announce Uber Green – a product that allows Kiwis to request hybrid or all-electric rides. Starting this May, riders can enjoy a lower or no-emissions ride.
If your vehicle has a hybrid or fully electric engine, you will automatically be able to drive on Uber Green.
- What is Uber Green?
Down Small - Available exclusively to driver partners in hybrid or battery electric vehicles
