With Christmas and New Year fading from memory, it can be easy to feel stale and sluggish. It can also be a tempting time of year to just stay home. But if you fill February and March with plans for action-packed weekends, you’ll soon have your mojo back. Here’s our guide to some of the best events in Lagos this weekend and beyond, to help you do just that.
Romance between the covers
If you have a passion for reading romance, you’ll love RomFest Africa, West Africa’s first event of its kind. It brings together writers, readers and industry insiders in Lagos on February 15 and 16, appropriately just after Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re a bookseller, aspiring author, blogger or reviewer, this event is for you. Expect readings, talks, book signings and more over the two days, as you meet others who share your passion! There’s also a book fair where you can meet authors and buy their books, and you’ll even get a goodie bag! The event concludes with a gala awards dinner.
All Lagos is a stage!
Lagos Theatre Festival is in town from February 25 until March 3, and it’s being held on a dramatic scale, with more than 600 artists presenting more than 100 shows at no fewer than 20 venues over the week. Founded by the British Council in 2013, the festival is now in its sixth year. In 2019, it’s set to present lots of new work, with the theme ‘Imagine the Unimaginable’. The aim is to capture, through performance, the activities and comings and goings of the city of Lagos and wider society.
An open-access fringe event is run alongside the curated strand, where children’s theatre, dance, film, comedy and puppetry and cabaret will all be performed. So, if you’re in Lagos during this week, you’ve got plenty of things to do!
Lords (and ladies) of the dance
For its third outing, danceGATHERING takes the theme AFROSPACETIME. It’s billed as a ‘dance lab and anti-disciplinary’ gathering and takes place from February 11 to 19. It brings together dancers, choreographers, visual artists, DJs and others, from across Africa, Europe and beyond.
Promising to be one of the hottest events in Lagos this season, the two weeks are packed with dance labs and active collaborations. It culminates in a massive street art intervention on February 23 and 24, which sees Lagos’s Broad Street being closed down to hold it. So if you’re wondering about events in Lagos this weekend in particular, wonder no more. We can help if you need to get around town reliably while this event is on.
Get social
Launched in 2013, Social Media Week Lagos has become Africa’s biggest tech and media event. In 2019, it takes place at the Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, from February 4 to 8.
Thousands attend from across Nigeria and further afield, making it one of the most prestigious events in Lagos, attracting global thinkers, business leaders and others. The focus is on trends, ideas, insights, policy and practices which use the latest technology to transform communities and industries across the African continent. In 2018, it featured more than 400 speakers and over 23,000 delegates. This year offers another game-changing week of workshops, talks, outstanding networking opportunities and immersive experiences.
So there’s a lot coming to Nigeria’s biggest city in the next several weeks. Whatever you enjoy, there are plenty of chances to get out and about and have some fun.
