Beyond the books: how Compton College supports its students with Uber Eats
December 28 / Global
At Compton College, every student is a success story.
Located in Southern California, Compton College shines as a beacon of excellence, guiding thousands of students each year into their next chapter—and addressing real-world needs while they’re still in school to help make sure every one of them thrives.
After a survey found that many student athletes felt they didn’t eat enough to compete at their highest level and were going to bed hungry, the college in 2021 became the first California Community College to provide meals to its student athletes through Uber Eats. Since then, we’ve expanded our partnership to support meal access for hundreds of Coyotes—athletes and non-athletes included.
Fueling athletes on the fly
On the road, student athletes often face limited meal choices and tight budgets. Compton College Athletics tackles this challenge by offering Uber Eats vouchers for away-game travel, ensuring that the Coyotes can meet their dietary needs with a variety of meal options.
By using the Uber for Business dashboard, Compton College administrators adjust voucher amounts to fit per diem limits, manage which athletes receive subsidies, and turn team profiles on and off based on travel schedules. For Coyote athletes, fueling on the go is simple: They claim their voucher, order directly on the Uber Eats app, and enjoy a delicious meal. No cash, no complicated reimbursements—just convenience.
Since our partnership began, Compton College has provided over 5,500 meals for athletes on the road.
Nourishing the future
Food insecurity is a critical issue in higher education institutions, affecting more than 20% of undergraduate college students.
Compton College also uses Uber to support food-disadvantaged students in state-funded Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE), and NextUp programs. Participating students receive Uber Eats vouchers, helping them stay nourished with convenient meals and focused on what matters: excelling in their education.
“We’re happy to have chosen this meal program with Uber,” says Corina Guzman, Program Technician. “It’s been a total success in our department, as some of our students depend on these resources.”
