A new year can bring fresh opportunities, but sometimes it can be all too tempting just to hunker down at home. The best way to energise yourself and bin any lingering January blues for good is to head out into the city and enjoy some of the great events in Nairobi that are happening over the next couple of months.
All that jazz
The red-hot sounds of the Safaricom Jazz Festival can be heard on the weekend of February 23 to the 25th, at the city’s Kasarani Training Centre. Now in its fifth year, this festival has quickly gained a reputation for electrifying performances of some of the best local and global jazz music around – and 2019 is set to be no exception.
Expect another line-up of brilliant performers from America, Europe, Israel and South Africa, as well as Kenya. Acclaimed US jazz trio BWB are the show’s headliners, with American Grammy winner Marcus Miller also taking to the stage. So, if you’re in town the final few days of February, this jazz festival is definitely one of the top events this weekend in Nairobi. And don’t worry about getting home – we can help.
Better by design
Nairobi Design Week is one of the most creative events in Nairobi and is an annual festival which takes place from March 18 to 24, with a series of exciting events and projects taking place at venues across the city. There are numerous chances to network and meet the people who make up Nairobi’s vibrant design community in relaxed settings, including an event at The Alchemist Bar, Westlands, on the evening of March 18.
Unstoppable reggae
If you’re wondering what to do in Nairobi on February 16, wonder no longer! Check out the No One Can Stop the Reggae concert with the legendary Richie Spice, backed by his Element band, to be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. Richie will be joined by DJs Moh Spice, Juan and Heno for a night of thrilling music that is, quite literally, non-stop reggae! Tickets are available exclusively from ASA.
Africa Nouveau Festival
The vibrant event is returns this year for its second outing. Head to Ngong Racecourse on the weekend of March 8 and 9 for two days of music and arts, bringing together creators, curators and fans. With a focus on alternative, progressive sights and sounds from the African continent, the event aims to expand the way Africa is understood.
As with last year, the two days are poised to showcase innovative and trend-setting artists, and in 2019 the line-up will include South African rapper and poet Sho Madjozi. Expect to rub shoulders with fashion designers and musicians, from hip-hop artists to alternative jazz bands. Check back often for updates to help plan your weekend.
With the many events in Nairobi this weekend and beyond, and so much going on, there really is no excuse for staying home!
