RBI’s recent guidelines on India-issued cards means, starting 1-Oct-2022, merchants operating in India (such as Uber) cannot store card details and can only use tokens for repeat transactions. Untokenised cards will be deleted on Uber systems on or before 30-Sep-2022.
To continue using stored cards for seamless payments, you will need to provide a one-time consent to tokenise your card information. You will see this additional consent step while clearing a payment through an existing saved card. This is available on the latest version of the Uber app.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Network Tokenisation?
Network Tokenisation means replacing card details (card number/expiration date) with a unique value called a ‘token’ issued by the card network. Starting 1st Oct 2022, merchants operating in India are not allowed to store details of India-issued cards. All merchants must delete the card information stored with them and can only use network tokens for repeat transactions.
What are the benefits of Network Tokenisation?
Network tokenisation removes the need for storing sensitive card data which significantly reduces the risk of payment card fraud and data theft. As a result, transactions from network tokens are considered safer.
