Uber is introducing a new way to ride — Taxi Fixed Price, giving riders the confidence of knowing the maximum price they’ll pay before requesting a trip.
This new option builds on Uber’s commitment to transparency and choice, helping both riders and drivers enjoy a smoother, more predictable experience on every trip.
Why we’re launching Taxi Fixed Price
Upfront Pricing has long been a core part of the Uber experience globally. It provides clarity for riders and consistency for drivers, reducing uncertainty and helping to grow overall trip demand.
Where riders know the price before they travel, they take more trips. Taxi Fixed Price brings this same confidence to the taxi experience, aligning with our goal to make Uber the most reliable way to move around.
How Taxi Fixed Price works
When you receive a trip offer, you’ll clearly see “Taxi Fixed Price” on the offer card, along with the maximum earnings for that trip. Here’s how it works:
- Accept the trip – You’ll see the maximum fare before accepting.
- Start your meter – Begin the meter as usual once the trip starts.
- Complete the trip – At the end, enter the metered fare into the app.
- Get paid the lower of the two –
- If the meter price is higher than the Taxi Fixed Price, you’ll receive the fixed price.
- If the meter price is lower, you’ll receive the metered fare (minus the service fee).
This ensures riders are always charged the lower of the fixed or metered price, in full compliance with Irish taxi regulations. The system uses localised trip data, including real-time route and speed patterns, to make fair, accurate price estimates.
What this means for drivers
Taxi Fixed Price trips will appear alongside your regular metered Taxi trip offers. You’ll continue to receive both types — the new option simply adds more opportunities to connect with riders who prefer upfront pricing.
This product helps build rider trust, which leads to higher demand and more potential trips for you.
Transparency you can count on
With Taxi Fixed Price, Uber continues to improve the taxi experience — ensuring every rider and driver can move confidently, knowing exactly what to expect before every journey.
Taxi Fixed Price – FAQs 🚖
- 1. What is Taxi Fixed Price?
Taxi Fixed Price is a new trip option where riders see a single maximum price for their trip before requesting. This transparency increases rider confidence and demand, as people take more trips when they know what they’ll pay upfront. Under Irish regulations governing agreed fares, riders must always be charged the lower of the agreed fixed price or the meter fare. This means that while you’ll see the fixed price before accepting a trip, the rider will never pay more than what’s shown on the taximeter.
- 2. Why is Uber making this change?
We’re introducing Taxi Fixed Price to provide greater transparency and consistency for riders and drivers. When riders see the total fare before requesting, it increases trust and trip demand. This approach is already a core part of the Uber experience globally, ensuring fairness for everyone.
- 3. How does Taxi Fixed Price work, and how is payment calculated?
Taxi Fixed Price trips are clearly labelled when offered, showing the maximum earnings you’ll receive.
- Start your taximeter as usual when the trip begins.
- After the trip, enter the meter fare into the app.
- If the meter fare is higher, you’ll be paid the Taxi Fixed Price.
- If the meter fare is lower, you’ll receive the metered amount minus service fees.
The system uses local trip data (including route and speed) to calculate real-time price estimates
- 4. Will I see the proposed route and the earnings I will make before accepting the trip?
Yes, your offer card will display the route from which the price has been estimated and the maximum earnings you will make from the trip (if the taximeter price is lower than the fixed price for the passenger, you will earn the taximeter price minus your service fee). - 5. How are trips with multiple stops priced?
Riders can add up to five stops when booking a trip. These stops are incorporated into the fixed price provided.
- 6. What if the rider wants to add stops during the trip?
If a rider wants to make extra stops after the trip has started, they’ll need to update their route directly in the Uber app. This ensures the new fixed fare is calculated correctly. You can politely guide them to do so by saying something like, “Please add the stops in your app so the fare updates automatically.”;
- Tap the three dots on the Trip Details tile (the one showing “Heading to [your location]”).
- Tap the “+” icon.
- Tap “Add stop” and enter the address.
- Tap “Done” to confirm.
- Review and accept the updated fixed fare.
Icons to know:
- Black icons = additional stops.
- Red icon = final stop.
At Each Stop:
- Swipe “Confirm Stop” once you arrive.
- Only tap “End Trip” after all riders have exited the vehicle.
- 7. What if the rider changes their destination during the trip?
If a rider updates their destination mid-trip, a new Taxi Fixed Fare will be generated. The rider must confirm this updated fare in the app before it applies.
If they don’t confirm, the trip will continue under the original fixed fare, and the final payment will be based on the lower of the meter fare or the fixed price. You’ll receive an in-app notification anytime a destination change is made.
You can guide riders to update their destination correctly in the app by saying something like, “Please update your destination in the app so the fare adjusts automatically.”
Here’s how riders can update their destination:
- Tap the three dots on the Trip Details tile (the one showing “Heading to [your location]”).
- Tap the pen icon to edit the final destination.
- Tap the “x” to remove the original destination.
- Tap “Add a stop” and enter the new final address.
- Tap “Done” to confirm.
- Review and accept the updated fixed fare.
- 8. What happens if a rider requests to go a different route than in the app?
If a rider has a preferred route that is not the one proposed to you, they will need to add a stop to their trip to reflect this route (even if the trip won’t physically stop). This will then require the rider to accept the new Taxi Fixed Price for the trip.
- 9. What if I don’t agree with a new mid-trip price?
We encourage you to complete the trip. If you don’t agree with the new price, you can let the rider know and find a safe place to end the trip. Depending on where the trip ends, you’ll receive the lower of the initial Taxi Fixed Price or payment based on the taximeter. You can choose not to continue a trip at any time.
- 10. Can I request a fare adjustment for a Taxi Fixed Price trip?
No. Trip payments for Taxi Fixed Price trips cannot be adjusted. Because Irish regulations require that riders pay the lower of the fixed or metered fare, Uber cannot review or modify payments after the trip. If a rider changes their destination or adds stops or requests a different route, ensure they update these in the app; otherwise, the final fare won’t update.
- 11. Can I see a detailed breakdown of my Taxi Fixed Price payment?
Unfortunately, we can’t provide a detailed breakdown for Taxi Fixed Price trips. You’ll be paid either the fixed fare shown on the offer card or, if the meter fare is lower, that amount instead. You can view your payment details, tips, and tolls anytime on partners.uber.com.
- 12. Why was my trip payment not honoured at the Taxi Fixed Price?
If your final payment was lower than the Taxi Fixed Price, it’s because the metered fare was less than the fixed price. In line with Irish regulations, the rider is always charged the lower amount, and your payment reflects that.
- 13. Can I refund the rider’s fare?
The rider will be charged the lower of the Taxi Fixed Price or what you enter into the app as the taximeter price. If you want to charge the rider a lower price or refund the rider, you can enter a lower price into the app.
- 14. Can I opt out of Taxi Fixed Price trips?
Taxi Fixed Price trips are always clearly shown on the offer card. While you can’t turn off or hide these offers, you’re never required to accept them. You’re free to choose which trip offers you’d like to take.
