【Uber App Guide for Riders】learn more about Upfront Fares
27 November 2020 / Hong Kong
If the default tunnel is Western Harbor Crossing and the actual one used is the Cross Harbor Tunnel, will the UFP be applied in such case?
How Upfront Pricing (UFP) works:
When you select any Uber ride option, the price shown in-app at the beginning of the trip is the estimated fare you’ll be charged once the ride is completed. The following factors determine the total fare of each Uber ride:
- Base fare: The price for different vehicle types
- Time: From the start to the end of the trip
- Distance: Total kilometers
- Surge pricing (if applicable)
- Tolls (if applicable)
- Booking fee
Upfront fare is calculated based on your trip’s expected time and distance, the vehicle option you select (UberX, Black, UberXL, Taxi, etc) and also accounts for the predicted traffic and availability of driver-partners at the time of the request. If demand is high and dynamic pricing is in effect, your upfront fare may be higher.
The fare displayed at the beginning of the trip may not end up being the same amount you are charged if there’s a significant change in pickup/drop-off locations, use of a different tunnel, addition of a new stop after request, or change in suggested route etc.
If the actual route coincides with the originally estimated distance and time, UFP will continue to take effect.
In your upcoming trips, if you have a particular route or tunnel in mind, you could let the driver-partner know. However, if the actual and predicted route or tunnel differ by a significant level, upfront fares may no longer be applicable. The final fare will be calculated based on the actual route.
For example, if the default tunnel is Western Harbor Crossing
and the actual one used is the Cross Harbor Tunnel, the UFP will no longer apply and the final fare will be calculated by actual time and distance.
Please note that default suggested routes on the Uber App are based on the most efficient route. If you choose to use the Cross Harbor Tunnel instead of the Western Harbour Crossing, time and distance of the route may change. The final fare will therefore be calculated not only based on the difference of toll fee, but also put into factor the change in distance and time taken.
