Statement on the verdict against five driver partners at the Hong Kong Magistrate’s Court
10 March 2017 / Hong KongWe are very disappointed with today’s court decision, which we believe goes against the best interests of riders, drivers and the city of Hong Kong itself.
Lawyers for the five driver partners are reviewing the basis for the judgment. We have been informed that they will be evaluating all available legal options, including appealing this decision.
Sharing a ride shouldn’t be a crime. Our thoughts are with the driver partners and their families. We will continue to stand by them and provide assistance during this difficult time.
Since Uber arrived in Hong Kong in mid 2014, more than one million people have downloaded the app, giving riders a convenient and reliable transportation option and driver partners a valuable economic opportunity.
Technology, innovation and the smartphone have made this possible. But Hong Kong’s current transportation regulations have failed to catch up with this new reality and now risk reducing choice and competition, failing the people of Hong Kong in the process.
For over 100 years, Hong Kong has taken pride in its ability to adapt to change and embrace global and regional economic trends. Over 100 governments and cities in Asia and across the world have responded to ridesharing with regulations that allow this industry to grow. There is no reason why Hong Kong shouldn’t be among them.
We have consistently sought to partner with authorities and other stakeholders to find solutions that enable ridesharing to flourish, and we will be submitting proposals for regulatory reform to the existing Government and the three Chief Executive candidates.
Today, we stand with the five driver partners, we will continue to support them and advocate for positive change that realises the full benefits of ridesharing for everyone.
