1. Ho To Tai Noodles 好到底麵家 | Yuen Long
With over 60 years of history, Ho To Tai is one of the oldest restaurants in Yuen Long and was listed in the 2016 Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand restaurant.
Tip: If you go, don’t forget to order their famous shrimp roe over egg noodles and their wontons!
2. Mrs. Tang Cafe 華嫂冰室 | Yuen Long
There are always long lines outside Mrs. Tang Cafe with people flocking in for their pineapple bun sandwiches with eggs and tomatoes.
Tip: Go early for their 8am and 2pm seatings (go half hour before the seating starts), especially for Saturday. They are closed on Sundays.
3. 屏山老地方 | Yuen Long
They are known for dishing up an array of fusion Chinese minced meat patties (肉餅). Have you ever seen mango with minced meat? You’ll find it here!
Tip: They only take cash, so be sure to stop by an ATM beforehand.
4. Tai Tong Bakery 大同老餅家 | Yuen Long
Yuen Long is synonymous with wife cakes and the place best known for them is Tai Tong Bakery.
Tip: Wife cakes are pastries that are soft and flaky on the outside with a wintermelon flavor inside. Be sure to get one here and don’t forget to try their other innovative flavors, such as the green bean/ginger flavor.
5. Farm Milk Co. Ltd. 農場鮮奶有限公司 | Yuen Long
As the name suggests, these guys really know their milk. Be sure to order their famous fresh ginger steamed milk, but not before you try out their luncheon meat with fried egg on instant noodles!
Tip: If you order the ginger steamed milk, make sure to let it sit so that it has a chance to form its tofu-like texture.
6. Mai Po | Near Yuen Long
It is a nature reserve with 6 types of wetlands with over 380 species of birds, of which 35 of them are of global conservation concern.
Tip: You must purchase a tour through WWF to have access to the wetlands.
7. Tuen Mun Park | Tuen Mun
This is the largest public park in the New Territories with a lively atmosphere and includes The Reptile House which has over 20 different species of reptiles, a model boat pool, a roller skating rink and a playground.
Tip: The park and The Reptile Park are both free admission, and though the park is open 24 hours, The Reptile House is only open 9am-6pm daily. Also, if you visit on a Sunday, there are performers singing and musicians at the park.
8. Nam Sang Wai | Near Yuen Long
Come to this picture perfect-oasis for a stroll or a picnic. With fish ponds, a variety of birds, mudflats, and a gorgeous sunset, Nam Sang Wai is a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong.
Tip: Hop on one of the small boats at the Nam Sang Wai ferry pier, one of the last river crossing boats in Hong Kong. If you have a drone, Nam Sang Wai would be great for pictures from an aerial view. Also, stay for the gorgeous sunset here! You may also stop by Tai Sang Wai for the sunset, it’s not as popular as Nam Sang Wai, but it’s still amazing nonetheless.
9. Sam Shing Estate | Tuen Mun
The Sam Shing Estate is a public housing estate in Tuen Mun, and due to its close proximity to the water, there are many seafood restaurants at the estate. Check out the architecture of the buildings, take a walk along the promenade, and pick the seafood you want for dinner.
Tip: One of the most popular seafood restaurants is Nam Kee at the entrance of the estate. You may stop into Fat Kee which is at the center of the estate for a more local, neighborhood feel. Have someone in your group stand in the queue to grab seats while the others go pick out the seafood you want your restaurant to cook up for you.
10. Miu Fat Monastery | Tuen Mun
The Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery consists of two buildings. The traditional Ten Thousand Buddhas Hall has a red tiled roof, and over 10,000 gold Buddhas reliefs on the interior wall. The more modern Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery was created to resemble a giant lotus.
Tip: The main hall at the top of the Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery has great views of the Tuen Mun area, so make sure to go up there!
11. Ping Shan Heritage Trail | Yuen Long
The trail is 1.6km in length and you can pass through traditional Chinese buildings including the Tsui Shing Lau Pagoda, Tang Ancestral Hall, and Hung Shing Temple.
Tip: Not all the buildings on the trail are open to the public everyday so be sure to check the hours beforehand.
12. Kam Tin Country Club | Kam Tin
There are fun activities to do here as a group, including archery, war games, BBQ, and bumper cars. There’s also strawberry picking if you come December-April!
Tip: You can even bring your pets to the BBQ for a $10 fee at designated BBQ spots.
13. Tsing Shan Monastery | Tuen Mun
It is one of the three oldest temples in Hong Kong and where some of the scenes from the Bruce Lee film “Enter the Dragon” were filmed. It is quite spiritual, calm and open so it is great for a relaxing visit as there aren’t many people that go here. There are also great views overlooking the city.
Tip: It is quite steep as you are walking up to the monastery so be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you are not getting dropped off at the entrance. Otherwise, be sure to be mosquito ready with mosquito repellent.
14. Pak Nai | Yuen Long
One of the best places in Hong Kong to catch the sunset, and faces Deep Bay (aka Shenzhen Bay).
Tip: The best spot to catch the sunset is along Ha Pak Nai, where Deep Bay Road intersects with Nim Wan Road. If you are looking for another great spot to catch the sunset, there is Lung Kwu Tan in Tuen Mun, which has an unimpeded view.
15. So Kwun Wat | Near Tuen Mun
For those experienced with abseiling and rock climbing, this is a natural cliff with a full view of Siu Lam and the north of Lantau.
Tip: There is no food/drink supply, or a washroom so keep that in mind prior to your arrival.
