Stephen (pseudonym) is a taxi driver-partner who signed up to the Uber platform last year. Originally his intention was to use the platform to get more orders in order to boost his overall taxi income.
Stephen was thrilled when he realised, unexpectedly, that Uber Flash managed to raise his income by more than 20%; and Uber became his main source of income when the taxi street hail business was severely impacted by the pandemic.
“The number of street hails largely declined during the pandemic… many taxi drivers are struggling to afford their monthly cab rent. Uber was an additional platform for me to find riders and helped me to secure my income. I’ve actually seen a 30% increase in my business when I use the Uber App during the pandemic compared to when I just rely on street hail!”
“The taxi industry is aging significantly. Not only do we not have enough drivers, this industry just isn’t able to attract young talent. On the contrary, Uber attracts more young people to drive.” Stephen added. “Welcoming young blood into this industry through a flexible earning platform can revitalize and benefit the industry in the long-run.”
Uber and the taxi industry can collaborate to provide a better experience to riders and at the same time helping drivers to earn more, forming a true win-win situation.
Regulatory certainty is critical for Uber to be able to fully invest in Hong Kong and for individuals like Stephen to make extra money. Help us regulate ridesharing, so we can bring investments and jobs to Hong Kong.
