What this means for you

Get help with medical treatment costs if you’re injured in an accident while on an Uber trip. If your injuries stop you from driving, you can also get help with lost earning opportunities.

Protection for medical treatment costs and lost earning opportunities

If you’re an Uber driver or delivery partner in Ghana, Partner Injury Protection can help you with emergency medical treatment expenses and other costs.

You pay nothing

As part of our global commitment to safety we have partnered with Old Mutual Insurance to provide as many driver and delivery partners as possible with protection under this program. That’s why Uber is paying for this program.

Your customers are protected too

While on an Uber trip in Ghana, your passengers are also automatically protected by the injury protection insurance.

How to claim if you’re injured

If you’re injured in an accident while On-Trip and want to get help with your medical treatment costs, please use the in-app claim form or contact Old Mutual (see below).

  • What are the key features of cover?

    Partner Injury Protection provides cover for specific events that occur while a Partner is On-Trip. The key features are listed below. For full details please read this information from Old Mutual Insurance.

    1. Medical treatment: If an accident happens On-Trip, this cover reimburses you for medical treatment costs (e.g. X-ray, operations, medicines) up to a capped sum. In addition, this cover reimburses ambulance service costs.

    2. Death and funeral payments: In the unfortunate event that you die as a result of an accident On-Trip, your dependents or heirs will benefit from a lump sum payment. They will also obtain an additional lump sum amount which can be used as you deem fit.

    3. Permanent Disability payments: In the unfortunate event that you suffer a permanent disability as a result of an accident On-Trip, you will benefit from a lump sum payment. The amount depends on the severity of the disability.

    4. Daily Payment Benefit (injury): If you are hospitalized for more than 48 hours as a result of an accident that happened On-Trip and are thereafter unable to work because of those injuries, you will receive a daily payment for up to 30 days whilst you are medically certified by a Doctor as unfit to work.

    *Note: All above covers are subject to prescribed conditions and limits, which Uber may amend at its discretion.

  • What are the terms and conditions?

    This insurance is provided to you subject to the following terms:

    1. Uber may withdraw, update or modify this insurance at any time in its sole discretion.
    2. This insurance is procured by Uber at its own discretion and cost.
    3. Drivers shall not in any way be responsible or liable for any payments or premiums relating to the insurance whatsoever.
    4. The Driver Partner and Uber acknowledge and agree that the Driver Partner can decide to opt-out from being covered by the Insurance at any time by indicating they are declining the protection of the cover upon notice or request. Declining cover will not affect your ability to use the Uber App.
    5. Driver Partners are independent contractors. This Insurance does not in any way create an employment relationship or an expectation of employment (including from a labour law, tax law or social security law perspective) between Uber and the Driver Partner.
  • Why is Uber doing this?

    Sometimes accidents happen on the road. We want to help you protect yourself against unexpected costs and lost earning opportunities due to accidental injuries sustained while you’re On-Trip. We are proud to be industry leaders with Old Mutual Insurance in being your partner on the road.

  • What does today’s announcement mean?

    We have been working closely with Old Mutual Insurance to develop new products in Ghana. These product offerings are now available to driver partners in Ghana, and also to riders. The new program launches on the 21st December 2018. Access to protection takes effect on the same day.

  • Can all Uber partners get this protection?

    Yes, all Uber driver partners now protected, but you can decline if you prefer (see the next question to find out how).

  • I don’t want access to the protection. How do I say “no”?

    It is your decision whether you want this protection or not. You are free to say “no” at any time with no consequences. If you decline, you will no longer be protected by Partner Injury Protection coverage, including help towards medical treatment and lost earning opportunities if you’re in an accident while on an Uber trip.   • Where is Injury Protection provided?

    Injury Protection is provided in the following countries where Uber operates Rides. At 21st December 2018 this includes Ghana, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

  • Does Injury Protection replace my own commercial vehicle motor insurance?

    No, Partner Injury Protection does not provide commercial vehicle insurance nor is it a substitute for comprehensive vehicle insurance. Please contact your insurer, broker or agent if you have any questions regarding your motor insurance.

  • What does “On-Trip” mean? When am I protected?

    You are protected from the moment you accept a trip request, during the trip and through to when the trip ends. Please visit this link to see the full policy details.

  • How do I activate Partner Injury protection for myself?

    You do not need to do anything. You are protected whenever you’re On-Trip using the Uber App as of 21st December 2018.

  • What is not covered?

    Like most insurance policies, Injury Protection has some general and cover-specific exclusions. Please read the full policy details and exclusions here.

  • How do I claim?

    In the event You might have a claim, You would need to submit a claim via one of the following channels:

    • To Uber through the Uber application; (Information You share will be provided to Old Mutual)
    • Via telephone to Old Mutual Claims Department on 0501569973
    • In writing to Old Mutual - Customerservice@oldmutual.com.gh
    • By Post to Old Mutual at Old Mutual Life Assurance Company (Ghana) Limited, P.O. Box AN 5754, Accra-North, Ghana

    In the event of any occurrence likely to give rise to a claim under this Policy written notice shall be reported to Old Mutual as soon as possible and in any event, within 14 days of the date of the Accident.
