Back in July we hosted our first international hackathon with TechCabal in Lagos, Nigeria. Our team partnered with TechCabal to encourage Nigerian app developers to participate in our global hackathon and highlight some of the great talent in Africa.

Six teams dedicated their time at Andela Lagos, to create the best app that they could build using the Uber API in 24 hours. At the end of the competition, Nigerian tech masterminds — Emeka Afigbo (Google), Adia Sowho (Etisalat Nigeria) Jason Njoku (Founder and CEO of iROKO Partners) Tayo Oviosu (Paga) and Richard Tanksley (Pulse.ng) were all in attendance to judge the event.

Simplifying your calendar needs with Executer

After a grueling battle, we identified three extraordinary projects that showcased the capabilities of the Uber API. The grand prize winner of the event was Team Executer. Think of Executer as your personal assistant that has full insight into all your upcoming meetings and events.

Once you sync your Google Calendar to the app, Executer figures out where you are and where you need to be at any point in time. A couple hours before your next events starts, Executer will send you a notification asking if you still want to continue with the Uber request to your next appointment. . If your plans have changed, Executer will cancel your Uber request, but if not it you can expect your Uber to be on its way.

Committed to making a difference in Lagos

This event is the first of many that Uber will be hosting in Lagos. Our team in Lagos is committed to being a meaningful contributor to the developer community in the city.

“We are so excited about the journey and growth we have seen so far. Lagosians now have a safe and reliable way to get around our growing mega city. We will continue to strive towards a goal of offering a highly effective solution to issues of safety, congestion, job creation and pushing for a “smart city” in Lagos — whilst also creating financial opportunities for the economy.”

—Ebi Atawodi, General Manager for Uber Lagos
