As of 2pm today, Calgarians were able to enjoy the reliability and convenience of uberX! And who better to be the first behind the wheel than former Calgary Flame Mike Commodore?

Together with Calgary Councillor Evan Woolley, the two participated in the inaugural uberX trip, and helped us officially kick off the launch of Uber in Calgary.

Meet Driver Zero: Mike Commodore

This wasn’t Mike’s first time behind the wheel– he drives with Uber regularly in Phoenix, Arizona. We took a few minutes to sit down with him and learn more about his Uber journey, from putting down the hockey stick to picking up ridesharing.

Tell us your Uber story- how did you end up driving with Uber in Phoenix?

I’d first heard about Uber in Los Angeles, and I started using it when I traveled around the US and Canada. I was tossing around the idea of driving, I’d talked to a few drivers when they’d picked me up and they all enjoyed it, so I started. Driving with Uber has been a good way for me to get out of the house and meet new people.

How would you describe Uber to Calgarians who’re interested in trying it out?

Uber’s a great option getting around town. When you order an Uber you can choose your ride, you know how far away your driver is, you can see where their car is on the map, and you can easily message or call your driver. You don’t need any cash, the cars are nice, and you never know what kind of vehicle you’re getting picked up in.

What would you say to Calgarians who’re interested in driving?

I think driving is great. There’s a sense of accountability with Uber– if you run into a rider that you don’t get along with, the five-star rating system works both ways.

The million dollar question: will Calgarians see you on the road with Uber when you’re in town?

I’ve already had some requests on Twitter, I will definitely be driving for Uber when I’m back in town.

Thank you to Mike and to Evan Woolley for joining us in launching Uber in Calgary today, we’ll see you on the road soon!
