Vehicle Defects and Violations
As a driver in British Columbia, you’re required to self-report vehicle defects, vehicle recalls, and criminal convictions and motor-vehicle violations. Keep reading to learn more about self-reporting and how to self-report.
My vehicle has a defect
You’re responsible to conduct inspections of your vehicle before your first trip and after your last trip of the day. If during these inspections you notice that your vehicle has a defect, you must report it in your app. Defects include, but are not limited to:
Service brakes;
Parking brakes;
Steering mechanism;
Lighting devices and reflectors;
Tires;
Horn;
Windshield wipers;
Rear vision mirrors;
Wheels and rims
How to report a defect
To report a defect, tap ‘Safety and Security’ in the ‘Help’ section in your driver app. Once you’ve reported a defect, your vehicle will be placed on a temporary hold until you can provide documentation that the defect has been resolved. There are 3 ways to resolve a defect:
Photos: Upload well-lit photos of the fixed defect through the app. Photos are only valid when the defect can be visually resolved (e.g. cracked windshield) and cannot be used in the case of mechanical defects (e.g. squeaky brakes)
Mechanic receipt: Upload a mechanic receipt for repairs of the damaged area (e.g. mechanical defects like squeaky brakes) to the app. The receipts must be:
– Dated on or after the date of reporting
– From an authorized mechanic
– Clearly state the defect has been resolved
– Clearly identify the vehicle in question by VIN, license plate, make and model
Visit the Greenlight Spot: A Greenlight Expert can help check the damaged area. Note: Greenlight Experts can only visually resolve defects (e.g. cracked windshields) and cannot be used in the case of mechanical defects (e.g. squeaky brakes)
My vehicle has been recalled
As a driver in British Columbia, it’s your responsibility to monitor your vehicle for any open recalls. Here are a few ways to monitor recalls:
Download the Government of Canada recalls and safety alerts app
Subscribe to the Government of Canada motor vehicle safety recalls web feed
Monitor all communications from the manufacturer regarding recalls
Sign up for open recall alerts from Carfax by creating a free account and registering your VIN
Visit your manufacturer website and search your VIN to check for any recalls
If your vehicle is subject to a recall, you must report it through the driver app by tapping ‘Safety and Security’ in the ‘Help’ section. The only way to resolve a recall is by visiting your dealership and ensuring that they resolve your recall.
Once your vehicle’s recall has been resolved:
Visit Transport Canada and input your VIN
If the page shows no open recalls, contact support through the driver app.
If the page shows that you have an open recall and you’ve recently resolved it with the manufacturer, wait 2 – 3 days and check Transport Canada’s website before contacting support
High-severity recalls
Sometimes, certain recalls will be deemed by Transport Canada as high-severity recalls. In these cases, manufacturers recommend to not drive your vehicle until the recall has been resolved. If your vehicle is subject to a high-severity recall, Uber will place a hold on your vehicle until the recall has been resolved and let you know if and when your vehicle is on hold or reactivated.
I’ve recently been convicted or received a driving violation
If you are charged with, or found guilty of, a criminal or motor-vehicle offence, you must tell Uber right away.. To report your convictions or motor-vehicle violations, tap ‘Safety and Security’ in the ‘Help’ section of the driver app.
Criminal convictions
Once you’ve self-reported, your account will be placed on hold until a new background check can be run. To obtain a new criminal record check, visit the VPD’s website.
VPD CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK >
Driving violation
If you received a paper ticket, you must wait until your disposition date to obtain a new driving abstract from the ICBC website.
If you received an electronic ticket, you can obtain a driving abstract immediately from the ICBC website.
Once you have your new commercial driving abstract, re-upload the document in your driver app.
If you’re cleared to drive with Uber, you’ll be notified when your account has been reactivated. If you fail your background check, and are not cleared to drive with Uber, your account will remain on hold.
Have questions? Call 24/7 phone support through the app.
