Building a better future for drivers and delivery people

January 25, 2022 / Canada

Over the last two years, Uber Canada has been listening to drivers and delivery people like you on how we can create a better future for app-based work.

You told us you wanted new benefits and protections while keeping the flexibility you value. And you also said you wanted stronger representation, which is why Uber Canada has reached an agreement with UFCW Canada, Canada’s largest private-sector union in the food, retail, and service sectors.

What does it mean for you?

  • Continued freedom to choose if, when, and where you work.
  • A joint commitment that UFCW and Uber press for government reforms to provide you with new benefits—like a minimum earning standard, a benefits fund, and access to workers’ rights—while preserving your flexibility.
  • UFCW representation services if you are faced with an account deactivation or other account-related disputes, including at the existing third-party dispute resolution process. These services will be offered for free.
  • A stronger voice with UFCW Canada meeting with Uber Canada every three months to discuss health, safety, and other related issues.

Uber Canada is working with UFCW to continue improving the driver and delivery person experience on the Uber app, and welcome their partnership in raising standards for all app-based work.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You will continue to choose if, when, and where you work as you do today.

  •  If you decide to engage UFCW Canada for representation services in the future, you will need to provide your information to them directly, and Uber would only engage with them as your representative with your consent.

    • You’ve told us that you want new benefits and protections while keeping the flexibility you value. And you also said you wanted stronger representation.
    • Working together, UFCW Canada and Uber Canada will press governments for the reforms needed to protect your flexibility and provide you with new benefits like a minimum earning standard, a benefits fund, and access to workers’ rights.
