Safe Rides, Safer Cities

Every week, hundreds of thousands of people in Canada trust Uber to get them around their city safely. By seamlessly connecting riders to drivers, Uber makes cities more accessible – providing safe, reliable transportation options for riders while enabling economic opportunities for driver-partners. Our technology makes it possible to focus on safety for riders and drivers before, during, and after every trip in ways that others can’t.

Rider Safety

From the moment you request a ride to the moment you arrive, the Uber experience has been designed from the ground up with your safety in mind.

Background Checks
All uberX driver-partners must pass a background check that includes a National Criminal Record Check of Federal RCMP databases. We have a zero-tolerance policy on any criminal record, including sexual offenses. We also screen motor vehicle records for any infractions by type and date.

Safe Pickups
Making sure you always have a safe, reliable ride starts before you even step into the car. You’ll see your driver’s name, photo, license plate number, car make, and model. You’ll also see the feedback rating when your request is confirmed—so you know who’s picking you up ahead of time. The app automatically pinpoints your location to provide true door-to-door service. That means you stay safe and comfortable wherever you are until a driver-partner arrives.

Trackable Location
Riders can easily share details, including the specific route and estimated time of arrival, with friends and family so they can see a rider’s current location and arrival time. Riders can also see the route on the map in the app. The location is clearly marked so riders know where they are on their journey – and if they are on the right route. We use GPS to keep a record of where a driver-partner goes during the ride, creating accountability, and a strong incentive for good behaviour.

Anonymous Feedback, Full Accountability
After every trip, you rate the driver-partner and provide feedback about your ride — but your comments always remain anonymous to them. We use your feedback to help driver-partners improve the Uber experience they deliver. They work hard to keep their ratings high, and they know our culture of accountability goes both ways.

Safer Streets

Making cities better is at the heart of everything we do. It’s much more than improving the way people get around. It’s celebrating what makes those cities special, caring about the people who make them great, and being responsible citizens. That’s why we work hard to keep our streets safe for everyone, whether they’re on foot, on a bike, or in another car.

Insurance and Claims
Uber maintains insurance for bodily injury and property damage to third parties. We also have a well established claim notification process. Upon being notified, we work with our riders or partners to notify appropriate insurers of a claim.

Vehicle Standards
Not just any car can drive on the Uber platform. It’s a title reserved for safe, high-quality vehicles that are in exceptional condition. In Canada, the average model year for vehicles on our platform is 2011, and none are older than 2006.

Driver Safety

Hard-working driver-partners are the key to the success of the Uber platform. They provide the foundation for the elevated experience we strive to deliver with every ride. That’s why making sure partners feel respected and protected is a high priority.

Cashless Transactions
Fares are automatically charged to the rider’s credit card, so driver-partners can avoid the risk and hassle of carrying cash and making change.

Driver Rate Riders
Driver feedback counts just as much as riders. We’re not OK with any rider behaviour that makes driver-partners concerned for their safety or the safety of their vehicles. Riders reported to be abusive toward partners or violate our terms of service may lose access to the system.

No Random Pick-ups
Before riding with Uber, riders are required to create an account with their personal and payment information. Rides can only be requested through the app, so there’s a detailed record of every rider and every trip.
