Borrow is a new on-demand vehicle carsharing pilot that allows riders to borrow vehicles from drivers. Below you can find the guidelines and fee policy for the Uber Borrow community.
Community Standards and Fees
We’re building a respectful, reliable community. To keep things smooth for everyone, we ask all Borrow Users to return the Vehicle in the same condition it was received, and all parties to be thoughtful and considerate. In some cases, fees may apply. These are subject to change at Uber’s discretion and may be charged in addition to any fines, tickets, and other fees arising from traffic violations incurred during a trip. Payment of these fees is by the payment method on file.
Traffic and parking
If a Borrower receives or suspects that they have received a parking or traffic violation ticket while using the Vehicle, they must inform the Earner upon return of the vehicle, and they will be responsible for the full cost, including but not limited to late and processing fees for resolving this issue. The ticket amount will be passed through to the Earner in full.
Tolls
Borrowers are responsible for covering all tolls during their trip, including toll fees and camera fees. Uber will pass the toll amount directly to the Earner.
Traffic Violation Fines
If the Vehicle has violated traffic laws during a Borrower’s trip (e.g., parked illegally, speeding, etc.) and results in a ticket, that cost will be charged to the Borrower and passed on to the Earner.
Vehicle Tow or Impound
If the Vehicle is towed or impounded while in the Borrower’s possession, the Borrower will be charged for the full recovery cost. The amount will be passed on to the Earner in full.
Cleanliness & Fuel
Keep it Clean
This is someone’s personal vehicle. Please drive it as if it were your own and return it in the same clean condition. Please remember to remove all your personal items upon completion of the reservation.
No Smoking Allowed
Smoking is not allowed in Borrow Vehicles. If a Vehicle smells like smoke after a Borrower’s trip, they will be charged a $225 fee. This fee is passed on in full to the Earner.
Low Fuel Returns
Vehicles must be returned with the original fuel level or above. If the level is below the original fuel level, a fixed refueling fee of $25 will apply to compensate the Earner regardless of missing volume. No compensation will be provided to the Borrower for excess fuel added in addition to the original fuel level.
Excessively Dirty Vehicle
If the Vehicle is returned in a condition that requires special cleaning, Borrowers will be charged up to a $225 fee, which will be passed on directly to the Earner.
Damages & Accidents
For more details, see the Borrow Damage Policy.
Lost or damaged car keys
If a Borrower loses or damages the keys during a trip, they will be responsible for the full cost of replacing the key and any related expenses, including towing or other charges if the Vehicle becomes inoperable.
Accidents
We know accidents happen. Damage to the Vehicle while in a Borrower’s possession may be covered by auto insurance. We encourage Earners to work out the accidents with Borrowers directly. If no solution is reached, the parties are responsible for reporting any incidents to Uber within 24 hours, and may be charged if the damage is not covered by insurance. To report an accident or damage to the Vehicle, please report it in-app with the associated proof and photos. You can also learn more about the Borrow auto insurance coverage here.
Pickups & Returns
Trip Extensions
No trip extensions are allowed. Returning the Vehicle late can inconvenience the Earner, cause a delay in the next Booking, and result in additional fees or charges. Please make arrangements to return the Vehicle on time. In the event that late return is necessary due to unforeseen events, please make arrangements with your driver in-app to coordinate the return.
Late Returns
Borrower should make an effort to return the vehicle at the originally scheduled time. If a return is late, each minute is billed to the Borrower at $0.39 per minute.
Excessively Late Returns
Vehicles not returned within 24 hours of the scheduled trip end time will incur an additional charge of $125 per day. Borrower should make every effort to be responsive to the Earner and Uber. Should the Borrower be unresponsive, the vehicle will also be treated as stolen, and local law enforcement will be notified. In the event of an emergency, please contact us directly through the app.
Vehicle Abandonment
A minimum of $1,000 charge will be applied to your account to cover the cost of repossession, and you will lose access to Borrow. Additional charges will vary depending on the price of repossession.
Trip Cancellations & No Shows
Borrower Cancellations
If a Borrower cancels a trip after the earner is already in route to their pickup location, they will be charged a $20 cancellation fee. This fee is automatically applied to the Borrower.
Earner No Shows
If the Earner is excessively late based on the ETA provided in-app, the Borrower can cancel the trip in-app. However, Borrower cancellation charges may apply if the Earner was already en route. If an Earner does not arrive at the return location at the scheduled vehicle return time to collect the Vehicle, first try to get in touch with the Earner in-app. Should the Earner be unresponsive more than 30 minutes after the scheduled vehicle return time and please contact us in app.
