Uber Planet as a travel preference: a choice to help change the planet
August 22, 2023 / Brazil

Millions of trips. Zero Emissions
At Uber, our commitment to sustainable mobility drives us. Thus, we aim to reach a milestone of 100% zero carbon emissions for all our global trips by 2040. With this ambitious goal in mind, we have launched Uber Planet, an environmentally friendly alternative. Uber Planet allows you to automatically offset the carbon footprint of your trips through the app. The offset is done through the purchase of United Nations-validated carbon credits and their subsequent investment in sustainable projects.
Uber Planet is available in 10 countries and 80 cities across Latin America. Since its introduction, more than 30.6 million users have embraced this crucial step by choosing Uber Planet. As a result, this choice has resulted in offsetting over 120,000 tons of carbon emissions.
Uber Planet as a ride preference
Now, Uber Planet is a travel preference. This means that your options have expanded. You can offset your carbon footprint with any of the products available in your region.
How is the compensation done?
The way we offset the carbon emissions from your trip remains unchanged. Through a small additional amount added to your trip fare, we coordinate the purchase of carbon credits. The credits purchased are invested in projects for the preservation of the Brazilian Amazon.
How to enable?
- Open the Uber app
- Click on Account and then on Settings, go to Ride Preference, and activate Uber Planet.
- Done! Henceforth, we will compensate for carbon emissions from all your trips. For each kilometer travelled, you will voluntarily contribute a small extra amount added to your trip fare.
- You can also deactivate this preference at any time and charges for subsequent rides will stop.
Meet our Partners
In our mission, we find support from various entities that share our environmental commitment. Thus, we’ve established partnerships with three organizations throughout Latin America: Carbonext in Brazil, Apala Group in Mexico, and Anaconda Carbon in the other countries in the Americas. Each of these partners calculates carbon footprints in their respective countries and assists in acquiring carbon credits.
Anaconda Carbon
Functioning as our partner in 8 Central Latin American countries, this entity is dedicated to providing services for measuring, mitigating, and offsetting the carbon footprint of numerous regional companies. Their environmental responsibility programs prioritize promoting renewable energy, reforestation, and energy efficiency.
Carbonext
Our strategic partner in Brazil, Carbonext, takes on the responsibility of measuring and offsetting the carbon footprint resulting from Uber Planet trips in the country. The carbon credits generated are directed towards projects that protect areas vulnerable to degradation in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest.
Apala Group
Functioning as our partner in Mexico, Apala Group is actively involved in measuring, researching, and backing projects designed to reduce the carbon footprint associated with multiple companies, including our Uber Planet initiative. These joint carbon reduction efforts focus on conservation, reforestation, and renewable energy, all validated by globally recognized third-party certifications that underscore their concrete impact.
This funcionality is optional and is subject to the following Terms and Conditions
- By activating Uber Planet as a ride preference, you voluntarily decide to pay an extra equivalent per kilometer for all subsequent trips, which is an approximate increase of up to 3% of the average price of your trip and will represent your contribution to the cause of improving the environment. This contribution is not considered part of the price charged by the Driver Partner.
- We will invest this additional amount in carbon credits to offset carbon emissions on each trip through our allies Anaconda Carbon, Carbonext, or Apala Group, as well as in green projects aimed at the environment.
- You will be able to access information on the amount you contributed to said cause in the travel receipt.
- You agree that for no reason will your contribution be deemed to represent any Uber revenue or commission relating to the digital service provided to you pursuant to the Terms and Conditions of Use that you have signed with Uber.
- The surcharge may take up to 8 minutes to come into effect on your App.
