As you’ve probably noticed, there have been some changes to the app for Uber partner drivers in Melbourne. These changes include;
- Surge pricing by location
- Heatmaps removed
Surge pricing by location
As you know, during times of high demand, surge pricing goes into effect. Previously, the whole of Melbourne surges exactly the same, even though in some areas, especially the suburbs and the airport, it may not be busy and there may be cars available.
We have recently improved our surge mechanism to allow different parts of the city to surge independently depending on demand. Instead of surge rates the same everywhere, rates could be higher in one area compared to another. You have probably noticed this occuring in South Yarra over the last few weeks.
Generally, this means places like South Yarra and the city can surge more often whilst quieter areas, like the airport and the suburbs, can remain surge free. This also means more demand in the quieter areas since prices won’t go up when they don’t need to.
Red = Surge pricing. The busiest area, where fares are raised to match demand.
Tapping the “i” button in the bottom right corner brings up more options and information.
Heatmaps removed
You may have also noticed that those green and red heatmaps you see in the app have disappeared from the app. The new surge feature will replace these. If you ever see a red surge zone, it’s always the best place to be to maximize your earnings!
