Pass the IHK exam for taxi and private-hire commerce

To prepare you for running your private-hire company, the exam covers mainly business fundamentals (such as cost accounting) and theoretical foundations of the taxi and private-hire industry.

Apply for vehicle concession(s)

A vehicle concession allows you to carry out commercial trips with your vehicle. You must apply for the concession—one for each vehicle in the fleet—with your local authority. Processing usually takes 3-6 months.

Buy or lease a vehicle

To obtain the concession(s) and get trip requests on the Uber platform, you need a commercially insured vehicle. Don’t have one yet? You can find car deals from Uber partners on the Vehicle Marketplace on Uber`s website, or visit the Greenlight Center in your city for assistance.

Once you have your vehicle concession(s) and vehicles, you can sign up as a fleet owner on Uber. A member of the local Greenlight team will help you finalize your onboarding.

Frequently asked questions

  • You decide how large you want your fleet to be. Just remember that you need a vehicle concession for each of your vehicles.

  • You can generally use rental cars, but they also need to have a valid vehicle concession from your local authority. Ask the authority for more information.

  • As a fleet owner, you have full flexibility on if, when, and how you want to use your vehicles on the Uber platform. Therefore, earnings vary. A member of your local Greenlight team can provide more guidance on potential earnings expectations.

  • You need to have a valid PHV business and vehicles with the necessary license for commercial passenger transportation. You can do the driving or employ drivers to operate your vehicles.

  • Each vehicle in the fleet must:

    • Have at least 2 doors on the right-hand side
    • Be in good condition without damages
    • Have a valid concession for commercial passenger transportation
    • Have commercial insurance coverage
