Software Engineer II, Backend
About the Role
Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. In our Brazil Tech Center, you will be joining the engine behind either our Delivery or Mobility Orgs. You won’t just be writing code; you will be taking ownership of critical components and features that determine how millions of people and products move globally every single day. You will make smart engineering decisions, design modular components, and own your solutions within your scope. Whether you are optimizing logistics for Delivery or scaling the core trip flow for the Rider App, you will be solving high-impact problems.
What You’ll Do
Own the design and implementation of high-impact backend components and features, ensuring they are modular, scalable, and efficient.
Deliver technical solutions independently across the full software development lifecycle.
Tackle complex problems with multiple dependencies, making sound technical tradeoffs.
Write robust, efficient, and easily maintainable code while championing best practices like rigorous testing and code health.
Proactively identify, isolate, and resolve issues in production. Participate in on-call rotations and address stakeholder inquiries, following a structured approach to troubleshooting, debugging, and establishing monitoring for your components.
Actively participate in architectural discussions. Partner with cross-functional peers (Product, Operations, Design) to translate requirements into technical deliverables.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of 4 years of solid experience acting independently across the full software development lifecycle, including a demonstrated track record of writing comprehensive test cases and considering critical edge cases before deployment.
Proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language (e.g., Golang, Java, C++, Python) and openness to learn our stack.
Strong foundation in computer science, including algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis.
Understanding of modular component design and system trade-offs (e.g., latency vs. throughput, database selection like SQL vs. NoSQL).
Experience participating in constructive code and design reviews, collaborating closely with peers to raise the technical bar, and actively reducing technical debt.
English proficiency for effective global collaboration and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building and operating highly concurrent, distributed systems at scale.
Experience collaborating with international stakeholders or distributed teams.
Proven resilience and adaptability when working in fast-paced environments with shifting priorities and ambiguity.
